I use Netscape webmail together with the email program with the Netscape browser 7.2. The program receives emails but I cannot send from the program. To send an email I have to go into the website of the webmail. The program used to work perfectly and all the settings are the same as before. I get an announcement that the server is not accepting SMTP messages. Has Netscape changed the outgoing settings or stopped this service?

Netscape webmail in the Netscape 7.x mail client has been a mess, off and on. And, I moved or fowarded all important stuff to other accounts. I have two webmail accounts set up in NS 7.2, which I, rarely, use, and one of them has been working well, but the other has failed to connect. I sent an e-mail from the address which connects to the other one, but I notice that the netscape.net SMTP is not there, and there is no Advanced button to click on. Soooo....
    Would you trust this mess?
I check my mail at the Netscape website, and I got it, so something has gone crazy with the set up. I really don't have any tested ideas, I am doing worse than you

    Welcome to the Forum, Doctor!

    Doctor,

The settings for the AOL/Netscape Webmail remain the same:

    Outgoing: smtp.netscape.net
    Incoming: imap.mail.netcenter.com
    Port: 143

I am able to send and receive from within the Netscape 7.2 Mail & Newsgroups Netscape Webmail Account today, so the site seems to be running. As Westside mentions, one never knows if the Mail will be available or not.

What you might do, is delete the account, and then recreate the account. Don't delete the IMAP Mail in your Profile, on the HD, only within the Mail & Newsgroups component in Netscape. Set it up as a new Email Account Account, not "Netscape Webmail" or "AOL Account ".

When you delete the Account in Mail & Newsgroups, then Exit Netscape. Open Netscape, and recreate the Account, using the above settings.

Let us know how it goes.

    Ramona

One should not have to ejnter the settings. The one account which works says only my username-Webmail, but the other one has been a problem. I decided to remove it, and then add it back, and I got blank space where the username and server go. In fact the entire reregistration was a farce, because nothing worked. Also, the smto was nowhere to be seen, nor any way to select it. I was getting a blank place where it should have been. I tried one more time removing the account and re-adding it, and this time I got nowhere being told that registration service was not available.

    Westside,

I removed and added the account just before posting to Doctor. I had no problem at all. In fact, the reason I set it up that way, is that I could never connect to Netscape Webmail using the "Netscape Webmail" selection, and still can't.

    Ramona,
not sure that I understand. Did you set up the account as IMAP, rather than Netscape Webmail. I have done the latter many times in the past, and both accounts worked well, in the client, till about one week ago when one of the accounts failed to connect to server. I did nothing about it, because I don't bother with Webmail, after all its antics. But, I can still receive and send mail from the website. I removed and added the account four times, deleting passwords and cache before re-adding, and account info on the hard drive. The last time it gave me me "login failed" but I can see the size of the Inbox, and that's it.
And, I still don't see an entry for the SMTP in the list.
I used to hit Cancel at the last step of the registration, but maybe this should not be done. Regardless, the set up demands birthdate and zip code. I don't like that a bit.

    Netscape7.2 and Netscape Webmail

    Dear Ramona,
I tried deleting the account in the Netscape mail program and then re-installing it as an email program, not AOL or Netscape, but that still does not work. What is so strange is that I have been using the program for years and it was previously very easy to install and use. How does one get in touch with the Netscape people?

    Doctor,

When you recreated the Account, did you set it up as IMAP Mail? I'm sorry the workaround didn't work for you. I removed, and recreated my account again, this p.m., after reading your reply, and still having no problems doing so.

Getting in touch with AOL is a problem unless you want to pay $39.95 for no answer. At one time we had an email address, but that is no longer working. The only answer I found on the Help page was to clear the browser Cache, and I'm sure you've tried doing that.

Are you using this setting for SMTP: smtp.netscape.net
If so, try using the default SMTP setting of your server, rather than that of Netscape.

Yes, that's how I set up the account. I use my default server for SMTP (cable server) rather than the Netscape SMTP.

Ramona, I did not try the other way, but I know that if I use the ISP SMTP, I can send. So, I tried two more times, using the sign up as Webmail. First, in my wife's profiles. It would not complete the registration, but was deflected to the old version of Webmail. I sent a test message, and when I came back to the client, that account was alive and well.
I tried one more time in my profile, and everything seemed to go smoothly, but all information of account, or server settings was blank. It shows the Inbox, but nothing opens, but, if I try to Send, it works, but I have to beat the announcement that it can't connect to server. And, it sends with the netscape.net SMTP.
    I have a sick puppy.

    Netscape Mail and Netscape Webmail

    Dear Ramona,
I solved the problem as follows:
I cancelled the account in Netscape Mail. I then re-established it as an email account and not a Webmail account with the Netscape Webmail Imap setting as the incoming server and the SMTP setting of my ISP as the outgoing server but without an outgoing name so that the outgoing server does not request a password. Then I noticed that the sent messages were not deposited in the sent folder so that has to be specified as well. This is found in "copies and folders" in the preferences.
    Really quite simple!
Thank you all for your help.

    Doctor,

Glad to hear all is well on the Webmail front! Yes, all settings must be enabled for everything to work. Using the default server for SMTP is usually your best bet if you're having problems.
