    Hi XPIsCorrupt,

    Lots of information here:
    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_standby.htm

    Possibly a driver problem - go here and scroll to the bottom of the page.

    I would start by rolling back any driver that you know you have updated recently. Trial & error - and no guaranteed solution I'm afraid.

    Incidentally - if you go into Device Manager and expand the Computer heading do you see 'ACPI Uniprocessor PC'?

    The link Pete gave you (in thread #4) mentioned "graphics adapter" and previous link given mentions several specific adapters known to have acpi problems. The adapter and acpi related problems are not limited to these though. APM and ACPI has a long history of being fussy. The mere fact that you have been using either standby or hibernate can even be the root of your problem. File corruption or data lost to lost cache when wakeup bloopers happen are not unknown. Here's the link previously given to you and I'm referring to again: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_standby.htm It also offered another way of tshooting a driver related problem, when you are unsure which driver it may be:
    HOW TO: Verify Unsigned Device Drivers in Windows XP
    Once again: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_standby.htm

    Specifically:
    http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q308/5/14.asp

    The driver, as related to you and one reason why members, here, can not give you any specific driver, could be anything. If it does not support or respond well to acpi or apm, it may have disabled the options via a patch or update as a way of protecting it's drivers or your computer from future possible corruption. Have you recently installed, added, updated or had problems with devices?

    I'm sure you've noticed the word "experiment" often when a check has been suggested. That is because once your sure all apm or acpi related dynamics are supported, recognized properally and loaded, and settings are as they should be, experimenting is what ya' got to do. You just have to learn, via "homework ", what experiments are safe and reversible. How to do them and reverse them. Simplistic answer, I know, but the topic of apm/acpi "foundation knowledge base" is much to vast to cover or offer on a public board such as this.

    ===================
    On a personal note, I had a corrupted hal.dll (loading problem). Used copy method to recover from this but it has left me with acpi problem (confusion). In Device Manager under the main "computer" list and in the category "computer" I have two devices listed, "Standard Computer" and "acpi Uniprocessor pc ". I assume upon the replacing of and reloading of devices by hal, it was decided that my computer was a standard rather than acpi compliant and made changes accordingly. I have not pursued this issue any further as I didn't use acpi or apm features anyway and actually consider it a blessing in disguise. This has left me with a "greyed out" standby option on the shutdown screen but does not seem to effect my computer in any other way that I have detected. (I have made note of other posts related to hal and acpi though, in case I do decide to pursue this issue later.) I'm certainly not suggesting you do this. Hal is a "make or break system" issue and topic and problems can leave your system in state were clean slate install is the only viable solution. But, out of curiosity, what does your device manager show as detected and used processor.

    --------------
    If none of this applies how about a look see in your bios to make sure the acpi settings are set the way you wish. Don't experimentally poke around. Do your homework and understand "thoroughly" what apm and acpi is and does. What the dynamics involved are. What your device manager should be reflecting when this is used. Even more important that you do this for your bios version and oem computer (manufacturer, make and model.) Go to your oem support site and look for "Power Management" problems related to your specific computer. Lot's of ducks need to be lined up.....

    ====additional info======
    Google group links to peck at and read at your leisure. Just to see what other users have done or may have discovered was their problem:
    http://groups-beta.google.com/groups?q="greyed out" standby&num=30&hl=en&lr=lang_en&sa=N&tab=wg

    This may give you some ideas or at least allow you to further understand why this is not a "one fix fits all" kind of problem and is user and system specific. I think you'll also see that video adapter seems to be the most frequently mentioned and related issue.
