NAV Live Automatic Update Not Working

I noticed last week that my NAV Automatic Update was not working - live update does work. I went to the Symantec site and found a FAQ - said almost always caused by a damaged file. I followed the instructions: download new file; started in safe mode, deleted contents of folder, run new file. I had to wait until this week (Wednesday) to see if it corrected the problem. It did not. I didn't get the new virus definitions yesterday.

I use Zone Alarm. I checked to make sure Symantec prgorams were all checked. I did find Event Manager not checked, but I don't think that has anything to do with the automatic update for virus definitions. Does anyone know the file name for automatic update - I'll check again.

Anyone have any ideas?

If you search further in this thread - search Norton and Symantec in this section, you'll see this problem is not rare it's one of Symanatec's neuralgia points, which is one of the reasons I don't use it.

NAC Automatic UPdate Not working

I didn't find a fix in the thread or by searching.

My scheduled weekly scan works. It scanned last Friday evening. It was Saturday when I noticed the virus definitions had not been updated for over a week. That's when I used the "fix" suggested by Symantec. But it didn't update this past Wednesday.

I've had NAV for 2 1/2 years - never had this problem before.

I just ran Live Update and got the 6/29 definitions and another update.

Guess I'll have to wait until next Wednesday to see if it works.

I understand that its the auto download that's not working. But if you know that NAV usually updates the defs every Wednesday, I don't see the importance of having LU run every minute - that's why I disabled LU, its pointless, at very least you run LU manually at some point on Wednedays, every day if you feel like it

If you want the latest defs at times other than Wednesdays, either use Inteligent Updater or the small app - Rapid Updater - that I referred to in that thread.

If only I could remember to do that.

That's probably what I'll have to try to remember to do.

I do run the Intelligent Updater from time to time when I am aware of a new virus threat.

But, I have come to depend on the automatic updates every Wednesday.

I let the Live Update feature default to "on ", because Symantec updates as needed, not just once or twice a week. It asks the server every four hours if there is something to download, and on a cable connection, I don't mind.

NAV Automatic Update

I always leave LU on, too. It doesn't seem to affect my machine at all. And, sometimes Virus Definitions are downloaded on days other than Wednesday if there is a high threat.

I don't know why it stoped working.

I use Live Update manually and only occasionally to scan for engine and program updates, not virus definition updates.
I had always thought that Live Update offers virus definition updates only once a week, whether run automatically or manually. Based on what is reported here, that is incorrect?

 

Every 4 hours:

Right from the Norton logs. ( I do miss that distracting NIS 03 "tattletale" Norton Alert Tracker; it was interesting to see all the internet activity happening quietly)

I have NIS, which includes NAV, so YMMV.
