Im new too this and ive been having a lot of trouble ever since i got a virus, which norton internet security detected as trojan.dropper thin_poker_installer.exe. norton stopped detecting that virus, but now i have lots of pop ups and the aurora prgram keeps opening. Also, c:\documents and settings\Drew frerichs\local settings\temp\wupt.exe. keeps trying to access the internet. i ve tried scanning with xoft spy, norton antivirus, and ad-aware, but none of them have done anything to stop my problems.

    here is my hijackthis log

    Hi Tallmidget11,

Sorry for the delay in getting a response. If you would still like or need help with this, please create a new folder on your desktop, name it HJT and place HijackThis.exe into it. Then create a new log and post the entire contents. Your first log is missing a bit of important information. ;)

I have merged your posts because I believe they are related to the same infection.

You should print this out and/or save it to text where you can access it in safe mode.

Please download the smitfraud.zip file. Save it to your desktop. If it saves as attachment.php, right click and rename to smitfraud.zip, then right click and extract the folder to your desktop.

Please download hijackthis_sfx.exe, saving to your desktop. Double click the file to install. This will install HijackThis to C:\Program Files\HijackThis and should place a shortcut on your start menu. Please run HijackThis from there when scanning.

I recommend you download the Zone Alarm free firewall. We'll install it later.

Download and install SpywareBlaster. Enable all protections, check for updates and enable them too. Then download IESpyad.exe, double click to extract (it extracts to C:\IESpyad by default), open the folder, double click the ie-ads.reg file and allow it to merge into the registry.

Either reboot and repeatedly tap F8 to enable the start menu and select safe mode, or go to start>run and type msconfig, hit enter. On the boot.ini tab, check the box next to /safeboot and click OK. Click yes to restart. This will restart your computer in safe mode. Logon to your user account.

Open the smitfraud folder and double click the RunThis.bat to run the tool. When complete, open HijackThis, place a check next to the following entries if present, close ALL other windows and click fix.

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.startsearches.net/search.php?qq=%1
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.startsearches.net/bar.html
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.startsearches.net/search.php?qq=%1
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://www.startsearches.net/search.php?qq=%1
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://www.startsearches.net/search.php?qq=%1
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = http://www.startsearches.net/
    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe, msmsgs.exe
    O2 - BHO: VMHomepage Class - {FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFA} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\hpC1EF.tmp
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WindowsFZ] C:\WINDOWS\System32\LogFiles\A5281300.so
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Intel system tool] C:\WINDOWS\System32\winnook.exe

You may need to configure Windows Explorer to show hidden files and folders, as well as system files and extensions for known file types.

Open C:\Program Files and delete the folder Antivirus Gold if present.
Open C:\WINDOWS\System32 and delete the file winnook.exe
Open C:\Temp if present, select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\Temp, select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\Prefetch, select all and delete.
Open the control panel, then internet options and delete the temporary internet files, checking the box for offline content.
Open My Computer, right click Local disk C: and choose properties, then disk cleanup. Check all boxes except compress old files and click OK.

Please physically disconnect your computer's internet connection.

If you used msconfig, uncheck the /safeboot box and click ok to reboot. Upon reboot you will be greeted with a message window from the System Configuration Utility. Check the box not to use and don't show, then click OK. If you used F8, just reboot back into Windows.

Install Zone Alarm and reboot when done.

Reconnect your internet and click Start>All Programs>Windows Update. Accept all critical updates (choose Express Install). Reboot when prompted and go back to Windows Update. Repeat until there are no more critical updates offered.

Scan your PC with RAV. If any files are infected, click the report button then copy and paste it here.

Run another HijackThis scan and post the log.

Looks great! :) It does appear as though you need more Windows Updates and I strongly recommend you get fully updated.

Xoftspy is an spyware/malware/adware detction and removal program, not an antivirus program. You should be fine. ;)
