Does anyone know of a program that shows what is running on your computer.
How do you find out what program is started and running at start up of your computer.

    Thanks Jerry Wells

jerry wells--Right after boot, simultaneously click Control+Alt+Delete|Processes tab. You may have to do a little detective work (like search on Google) to learn what each of the processes shown are.
Also running AdAware or HiJackThis right after boot, will show you what is running. And there report can be saved to a log. There are lots of other programs, but these probably do as well as most.

    Hello Jerrry,

When using Task Manager, you can make a picture of what's diplaying: make it full screen and bring up word pad then ctl+print screen > right click on the empty word pad doc and copy. The screen image will now be a Word Pad documnet. You may have to do this twice to get all of the TM entries.

Can be done with any screen image.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Jerry,

To add to what Jim just told you, once Task Manager's Processes tab is open, maximize the window so you can see everything at once.

Clicking on the individual column headings will sort the list in any order you want. For example, clicking on "Image Name" will sort the list alphabetically, while clicking on "User Name" sorts according to who or what started the process.

Edit: Charles's suggestion also works with M$ Word, but there the command is "Paste ", and you get a picture of the whole page, which can be enlarged to make the list more readable.

    start up

hi there I had a similar query in an earlier thread.
Go to Start...Run....then type in msconfig ..........then go to the start up tab, that will show all the stuff that your computer is running in the background. Just un-check on each process that you do not need, and there will be a few programmes you do not need there. Regards Ron

Here is another way. Get HijackThis, you should find it at the Quicklinks below, or this link.
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html
Unzip to it's own folder. Then open it, click on 'Open the Misc Tools section'. You can generate a Startup log (not the same as the HijackThis logs you may have seen posted here).
If you click on 'Open Process Manager', you will see what is running, and from what folder they came from.

Task manager, HijackThis and some others will NOT show ALL applications, processes and services that load when the computer is started, in fact, they show but a fraction of what is loaded at startup and 3rd party applications can be hidden from these tools because there are about 15 registry locations that an application can use to load at boot.

To see ALL that loads at startup use this free standalone (no install needed) program:

    Another nice piece of software

    Hi.
I can recomend you another software that does the job:
    http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
You can try this one to show you the whole tree of a speciffic process:
    http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml

The problem with the Task Manager is that a true hacker can hide the process he's running, so they are not shown in Task Manager. More than that, with Startup.exe you have all the places that can run programs and processes in the same place.

    Good luck.
