I have WMP 7.1 and when I click on Tools>Options>Formats it says "Registry Error ". I tried to play one of the files at www.tinyurl.cm/44.vjv (Edit by Mod - Dead link) and couldn't hear a thing. Windows Media Player 9 says it doesn't support thatfile type so it won't autoplay it. What do I do? I tried to d/l WMP 10 but it wouldn't let me. I have 98SE. Please help.

    Hi KingG,
As a self described "Beginner" I am a little hesitant at offering you a link and leave you dangling to fend for yourself. The link to the site, I am about to offer, however, is quite informative about many versions and problems with "Media Player" and how to overcome them. It's a bookmark keeper. You may wish to look the topics over and further explore the sublinks. I suggest that you do not use most of the fixes suggested without thoroughly knowing what you are doing or if and how these can be reversed. You may wind up making matters worse and snowball your current problem.

I have to take a break (for dinner) and will later return, to offer any specific suggestions, I feel may serve you best. In the mean time here's the link:

Try going to Windows Update and see if it lists any updates for Media Player (they won't be under the Critical Updates, just the general updates).

I cannot open that webpage you link to. It is not listed at www.tinyurl.com, so I cannot find out what type of file you are trying to run. Do you know the file extension?

If you fail trying to get Media Player to play special files, there are other types of players. Winamp is good and there is probably a player associated with the audio card you have (check the audio installation disk or the manufacturer's website). If you get another player to run the file, set the "file associations" for that player to just run the ones Media Player won't run, otherwise both programs will keep asking to be made default player.

    Hope some of these help.
    Matt

Attn Mods: I believe this post belongs in the "Other Software Forum "

    Hi again KingG,
I found what may be the fix for your wmp 7.1 problem when you click on the formats button.

In the section entitled Q: I have a question about the WM Player 9 Series installer or uninstaller... and found here http://www.zachd.com/pss/pss.html#wmp9rollback , via the link I had previously supplied. Towards this particular questions bottom is a section as quoted:
If you change that value data to be:
    "application/x-mplayer2 video/x-ms-asf video/x-ms-asf-plugin video/x-ms-wmx application/x-ms-wmd application/x-ms-wmz "
the File Types dialog should then work. If you're not comfortable editing this yourself, run this reg file to fix the "File Types" dialog. http://www.zachd.com/pss/v7formats.reg

The reg patch is a reg file that when double clicked on will merge the entry's into the registry for you. Backup the registry first so you can rollback the reg if desired or use regedit and manualy work your way to the hkey of focus and export that particular hkey before making any changes. If you do not know how to do so just ask and instructions can be given.

Knowing that many members have a preference for the older versions of media player I will not question your reason for using 7.1 but have chosen to address at least one of your problems. The other problem, as mattman has pointed out, is a bit more difficult because the link you have given does not contain the file 44.vjv referenced. The link or knowing the extension of the media that you were trying to play may have helped figure out if this format is supported by wmp7.1 or you needed another specific player. We can't fix what isn't there.... :)

Just to let you know that my WMP 7.1 did play those streams without problem. I am on dial-up so there was some stopping and starting to refill the buffer.

Winamp? How did we go from Windows Media Player to Winamp? Sorry but I can't help you with Winamp. I don't have and haven't had it for longer than I can remember. I try to keep my players down to a minimum. That way if an association fight occurs I can sort it out with minimum fuss. Media Player 10 serves most of my purposes. By the way the segments also played on wmp10 with one minor server glitch on segment 3. The server dropped me (theirs) before I had all the file loaded but on a 2nd attempt there was no problem. As mattman I am also using a dun connection. I don't know what that's going to tell you. Media Player performance or any player for that mater, is going to be individual system specific based, on a lot of factors.

Ann, Winamp was my suggestion for if Media Player would not support the file type.

    To KingG,
Via your new post to the board today, I see your on a wmp 9.0 series quest. Does this mean you have upgraded to wmp 9? Can you wrap up or update this post, please (just to finish this one off)? Also please note, This is a friendly reminder and I'm not trying to be a "traffic cop" or "nag" but.....media player topics should be posted in "other software" forum. This makes the search in the "Archived Files" more efficient and user friendly particularly when one chooses to filter their search by Forum as well as Keyword.

    To mattman,
Thanks mattman. The combination of short memory loss and failure to review the past threads of this post caused my head to spin a bit. I just wanted to make sure there was no confusion or misunderstanding on what player we were focusing on. Now I see how winamp entered into the mix.

Hello, everybody. Sorry to try your patience. If I could get crossfading in WMP9, I'd stick with it as default player. I've posted a separate message about that: this will be the last time I post any messages about it here. By the way, I'm a resident in a nursing home woth a PC with a 266-mhz processor and 32MB RAM.

    Hi KingG,
Your not trying anybody patience as far as I can see. Your certainly not trying mine. I enjoy posting on this board and helping when I am able. This is one of my favorite pass times. As for posting in any forum, mistakes happen. We have all done this and as you can see by the number of posts that eventually get sorted out and redirected by the moderators, it continues to happen everyday. This is not a problem. I was just trying to point you to the correct forum that may offer more responses by members who have had similar problems or may be more familiar with yours.

While I'm not sure what "crossfading " is, I will be most happy to look into this for you and if I find something helpful I will see you in the "other software" forum...... :) :D :)

Here's a big thank you for the update.

Ann, you work too hard! :D Sit down, take a break and whatever you do, DON'T think about Windows problems...that will take up, oh, about 5 minutes...you can then resume the short term memory loss and failure to review past threads, like the rest of us.
    :D
