Browsed through the forum quickly and it seems like most ppl wanne install and make media player work..

Well guess what, where i work, i DONT want ppl to be able to use it

I tried just to uninstall it from add/remove programs, but it didnt remove the shourtcut on the start menu (basicly thats all i need to do).

I changed the premissions on the executeable file, so they cant use it. But i still want it gone.

Seems like all i need to do is change the settings in "Set Program and Access Defaults ". However, i cant seem to find that option on my Win2k3 Enterprise server. But i cant find it on the start menu or under add/remove programs.

    Anyone got some tips here?

    Thnx

    /Cirno

Try policy editor (start=>run=>gpedit.msc) and get rid of

User Configuration: Administrative Templates: Control Panel: Add or Remove Programs: Hide Set Program Access and Defaults page

How about if you push it down as a global policy item rather than working from the local policy?

How about right click on the start menu shortcut and delete?

Been searching so much for these program defaults now that im starting to belive its removed from windows server 2003.

Booted my virtual clean windows server 2003 install, and i couldnt find any links to it there either..

Microsoft - Windows Media Player FAQ says you cannot remove it from 2K SP4, XP Sp1 and later, or 2K3. But if you remove access to it, that should take care of your issue of not wanting folks to see any signs of the app. Basically the same situation as with IE - too embedded in the OS to be able to remove it without breaking the system.

    So what is the problem?
What are your users doing that the only solution is removing media player?

smith, their not doing anything yet. Since the server isnt operativ yet, but they are not gonne be able to use media player. I've removed their rights to access it, but whats bugging the hell out of me is that i cant remove the shortcut on the start menu. Just want it perfect..

The point of my question was what are you anticipating they will be abusing with media player?
If your worried about streaming media block the port. Media player can be a usefull tool in an office enviroment and not a toy unless you are administrating a prison. :D
