I went to the windows update site and installed everything listed as a "critical" update.

All installed good except that IE6.

It gave me a warning message that states "Setup was unable to install all the components. Please close all applications and try running Setup again. "

Now each time we boot up we get message after message saying an installation was not completed ..........

OK, so it didn't work - I'll just stick with the version 5.X !

Question - How do we get rid of the "failed installation" data now stored somewhere that is giving me all those "try again "| messages ?

    Thanks

Hey: I did read all the postings and one with same problem had a reply to try this:

    http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...b;EN-US;Q281967

I go to that link and receive a Help and support article.

    Article ID : 281967

    Revision : 11.1

We did the steps suggested and got a list of only 4 "oem.inf files" - none of these are of any big size.

Checked the Windows .inf folder and there are 533 .inf files - however only 4 of them are "oem*.inf" type.
None of them are "0" in size.

That is Microsoft's solution - didn't work - any more suggestions out there ?

    Hello jbarker,

Do you have a restore point prior to the installs? If so, go back to it and start all over, this time do one update at a time, preferably spacing them out a day each. This time the one for IE cumulative first, since that's the one your most exposed for.

I went to the windows update site and installed everything listed as a "critical" update.
Doing them this way all at once simply increases the odds for having a problem.

    Regards - Charles

    No restore

We have no restore points - so I guess we're stuck with that "failed install"
    message from now on !

    Hi jbarker,

    We have no restore points
Is it shut off or is there a problem with it?

There should be add/remove entries for the crtiticals - right at the moment I can't remember whether this happens for WinMe like it does for XP. If so, see if there one for that IE patch.

    Regards - Charles
