Is this part of the Viewpoint thats referred to as spyware on this page, ?

    http://www.2-spyware.com/remove-viewpoint-media-player.html

It appears to be part of it and there are other files that viewpoint uses that
    are also on my system.

Mostly this spyware is related to AOL/AIM? Adobe, etc but i was surprised to
    see it in Mozilla.

(Nevermind) - I found an association with mozilla. it is part of viewpoint and
    mozilla - look in
    docs&settings\all users\applications\viewpoint\metastream3\HostRegistry.ini
This will show the association with mozilla.

OK, real question - If i delete all these viewpoint files (including the files that
reference mozilla, will mozilla still work??

    thanks,
    savagcl

    clif,

Have you looked in your Add/Remove Programs list for Viewpoint? Viewpoint was excluded from Netscape 7.2, and not included in either Mozilla or Firefox.

If not listed in Add/Remove, then try renaming the .dll files rather than deleting. If no problems occur, then you can delete them, or not.

Yes, i looked in add\remove, its not there.
This is what shows in D&S\all users\applications\viewpoint:

    [npViewpoint.dll]
    Path = C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\Mozilla\plugins\npViewpoint.dll
    NewerHostExists = 0

It appears to be used as a plugin for mozilla.

Guess it coming from my netscape 4.9 version.

    I'll try the re-naming process,

    thanks, Ramona,

And, a few more pieces of info. which one can get with a simple search.
Yes, it is a plugin file. There is some information which implies it as possible spyware. I have two items in my Add/Remove. One is the Viepoint Manager, and the Viewpoint Manager, as well as in Program Files. Also in the Profile area
As said in the second link, it may affect the operation of some software. I still have AOL, so it may originated from it. But there is no such file in any NS4 of any description.
The moral of the story is: do a search, in first place, external or internal.
I got 18 Viewpoint items on my computer. And, the file has never been recognized as Spyware by Adaware or Spybot S&D.
And, the original quoted article says as: Conclusion: VIEWPOINT IS A LEGITIMATE APPLICATION. Read more about it by following more info url.

I agree that viewpoint is a legit software and has its purpose.
However, the did state that they allow 3rd party (Comapnies?) to ride their
software into a system and place cookies within it. And they also state that
the info gained from these 3rd parties is not shared with viewpoint "unless
offered ". That sounds like a round-about way of getting info without being
the blamed party to me. And i dont doubt that the majority 3rd party cookies
are harmless, but the miniority must be taken into account.

I dont have AOL, and never will. So i think, after more reading, that i got it from
    Adobe Atmosphere.

Anyway, i renamed all the files and havent noticed anything different about my
    system.......

    thanks, All,
    savagcl

It is possible that the rash of cookies from all the Ad companies may have originated from Viewpoint. There is no need for the file in Netscape. And, the one which I have in Firefox may have come from copying the settings.
I will see how things go.
