I just bought the WinXP (full) version w/SP2. Wont have to rely on the
customized (chopped-up) version from Gateway anymore. :D

The only questions i have before doing a clean install is:

 1. Where can the SATA drivers be found for downloading? I'll need them for the
F6 question about specialized drivers - (i think).
Right now, I see nothing about SCSI/SATA within the device manager and
Seagate says there should be a line in the device manager somewhere
    stating as such.

 2. When i do the format of drive C: (wiping out the OS) will the other logical
drives (D, E, F) resident on the same HD also be "Cleaned "?

    Thanks for the help,
    savagcl

The SATA drivers should be on the mobo CD - if you have one. If not maybe you can download from Gateway or the mobo manufacturer's web site.

If you don't know the make/model of the mobo download and run Everest

No, but as you already have a version of XP on your m/c suggest you follow these instructions - dialogues from the screen ....

Check in your BIOS that the boot order is set CD/Floppy/HD

Boot from the Windows CD "“ follow the on screen prompts "¦..

To set up Windows XP now press ENTER

    Accept the Licence Agreement F8

Searching for previous versions of Windows

To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows without repairing press ESC

Ensure that the drive/partition selected is the one on which XP was set up and press D to delete the selected partition.

To delete the partition press ENTER

To delete the partition press L "“ heed the warnings and DOUBLE CHECK before hitting L

To create a partition in the unpartitioned space press C

Accept max size and press ENTER

To set up Windows XP on the selected item (Partition (New Raw)) press ENTER
Format the partition using the NTFS file system "“ preferred unless you want an install of Win 98 to access data on the drive/partition, if so choose FAT.

    Set up is formatting "¦â€¦

When format is complete XP will install.

You must either have the drivers for the mobo on a CD that came from Gateway or download them from the same. Don't even start without them.

You may not need to format - I think you can try a 'repair' install.

Format operates on one partition at a time; if you format c: it doesn't effect the other 'disks'.

Sorry Pete, for some reason, didn't see your post; does he really have to get rid of the old XP?

I still have the CD's that came with the system. I will look in them and see if
i can locate anything like that.

I have a: Operating System CD (says to re-install OS, use this CD.
a Drivers CD, an Applications CD and some other junk cd's (add-ons).

    From Everest:
Motherboard Name Intel Bonanza D875PBZ (5 PCI, 1 AGP, 4 DIMM, LAN)
    Motherboard Chipset Intel Canterwood i875P

For the latest chipset, i'll do a search of the Intel site.

    Thanks Guys,

Ok, I found a folder on the Drivers CD that has a folder called SATA.
I copied it to my HD (Not to drive C) since its to large to put on a floppy.

There are 2 folders under SATA - App and Driver.
in the driver folder there are 3 files and 1 .cat file.
    iastor.cat
    iastor.inf
    iastor.sys
    texsetup.oem

In the App folder there are 17 files, i think this folder is for the RAID setup.

I do remember seeing a SCSI/SATA line in my device manager using the iastor
as a driver but its not there now.

If i put the SATA folder onto a CD, then during the install when it ask for the
floppy with the driver on it, will it accept the cd or not????

A response from Seagate said there was no SATA driver needed but to check
with Gateway - my support from Gateway has expired and their asking to
    much to extend it.

How far off-base am i here?

    thanks savagcl

I installed XP-PRO on a computer based on ASUS P4P800 and a Seagate ST3160023AS. I don't recall installing any specific SATA drivers, only the chipset drivers.

    It works fine!

If you need any drivers from the CD, to install them, in explorer just highlight the .inf file, e.g. iastor.inf, and click File, Install.

there so i guess i'm ok. Know for sure in a couple days.

Now for 2/3 days of tweaking

    thanks,

I don't have anything in the margin. Not sure what you mean. if you've read all messages, don't worry about it.
