How to properly update your ATI or nVidia video card drivers

A guide can be found HERE

Thank you for taking the time to read the guide. I hope that some of you will get something out of this, and if not, then at least you know there's someone out there as crazy about this stuff as you.

you should update that post to include a link to the Driver Cleaner tool you are advocating.

I dont have any experience with that tool, but the concept looks interesting. I wonder how many people go through all that hubub to update thier video card drivers. I've been using the nvidia and ati installers for a while without any problems. I definatly see the value if you are backrevving though. That can get hairy sometimes.

Hi Kiwicolin: Just a note to let you know that the ATI driver cleaner got rid of system errors on my machine that resulted from replacing an ATI All In Wonder with an ATI 9800 Pro. Machine kept trying to load drivers for TV tuner etc. Since tuner was gone, resulted in system errors.

For whatever reason, this 9800 Pro will not work right with latest ATI Catalyst, no matter what I do. Driver Cleaner did not help that problem, but I was happy to get rid of the system errors.

    Anyhow, thanks again.

Driver cleaner works well. No matter how careful you are there always seem to be some vestages of old drivers left. I personally have never had a problem just overwriting NVIDIA drivers but it pays to do it well. I highly recommend it when updating or changing ATI drivers.
