On all my computers which run Windows XP_SP2 and Internet explorer, the HOSTS file which I updated doesn't work. I can still access all of the urls which it says it will block. I'm also running Macafee if that has anything to do with it. Can anyone help me?

Open the HOSTS file with Notepad and check the lines of data to ensure they are correct.

Normally you would see something like:

    127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net

The 127.0.0.1 is your localhost for your computer and will direct any calls for doubleclick.com back to you without any further action.

The 127.0.0.1 will always be the leading data on the line - then followed by one or more spaces - then a valid url that you want to block.

So...how does your HOSTS file look. Also be sure it's properly located at:

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC

There is nothing wrong with the format of the host file. I downloaded it from MVP. You can google MVP host and see the file yourself. There is nothing wrong with how it is written.

My guess is that your HOSTS file is actually HOSTS.TXT. This can happen for odd reasons depending on your shell configuration.

Go into a command prompt and CD C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC then run DIR to see what you actually have in there. If it is hosts.txt, then REN hosts.txt hosts will fix you right up.

Nope...only one host file. I also have XP_SP2, and is there anyway I cna change it so that it tells me the file extention (rar. exe. zip. ext.) the host file is called HOSTS, nothing more. any other ideas? Its a great way to save your computer from a virus...I don't wanna have to trash the idea.

In explorer (start > run > explorer > hit enter) tools > folder options > view tab and make sure NOTHING is hidden.

I would have mentioned that earlier but you list your experience level at "Experienced."

Open Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View >

Check "Show hidden files and folders "

Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types and Hide protected operation system files "

    OK out of there.

Another way. Right click on the HOSTS file, then Properties. What "Type of File" is listed? Should just say "File ".

    Hi Phyllis,

HOSTS doesn't have a file extension, but you should have a file called HOSTS.bak (for backup).

    Regards - Charles

    Phyllis--
    1) A HOSTS file that does not work could be a sign of virus or spyware.
    2) You could create another HOSTS file, most simply by using the HOSTS.sam file as a template and then renaming to HOSTS. Of course delete the old nonfunctioning one and put the new one in the proper place on the hard drive, which is C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC, the same directory that HOST.sam already is in.
