I am trying to assist a client of ours with a configuration issue. I don't know what order the software was installed, but I do know both IE and MSN are installed.

MSN is currently the default browser.

They need to have IE back as the default browser because of an application issue.

I know that you can go into windows explorer > tools >folder options...and change the file association. To me, this is a hack.

Is there another...proper way of changing the default browser association.

    Hello jedi,

Is there another...proper way of changing the default browser association

Start > set program access and default > custom. The first item is the Browser.

    Hi jdi,

Thinking about my answer, I made two assumptions: that the OS is XP and that SP2 is installed.

set program access and default was added directly to the start menu with SP2. pre-SP2, it was and still is in the Add/Remove applet left sidebar.

    Regards - Charles

    Thanks

The OS was XP SP2. I should have mentioned this first. Either way, it was the correct solution...and it worked too.

Another way would be from IE: Tools > Internet Options > Programs and check Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser.

Next time you start IE, you'll be asked if you want to make it the default browser.
