I have a choice of these two processors. Which is the best? I currently have 7 computers with AMD and they run fine and one with a P4. How does the Celeron compare to these?

Not even a close call beween the two - no decision required. No answer necessary.

I would vote for the AMD and I believe that's what Rockster2U says too ...... ;) ...... albeit in a cryptic way!

It's not even a valid comparison - other than they are both CPUs. If the AMD was a Duron, then you might have something to compare.

Apparently (?) the new AMD Sempron (spelling?) is the new "Duron ". Athlon64 is the flagship. Is this right (this stuff goes in one eye and out the other :) )?

No brainer from what I hear.

OLDSALTY, just about all the new CPUs have a specific number of "pins" and have a matching motherboard, just hope you are taking that into consideration.

AMD wanted to reserve the name Athlon for the top of the line processors. The new "budget" processors are named Sempron and are the previous Athlon XP but with the L2 cache reduced from 512 kB to 256 kB.

Have a look at AMD Sempronâ„¢ Processor Product Comparison

OK guys I guess you know what your talking about. I am a software puke and know some hardware stuff. So is there a place where I can see the power of these processors compared? I also have an affinity toward AMD but that is emotional not logical. Is there a non-emotional comparison somewhere?

Not trying to be the wise-guy here but you'll have more success looking for benchmark comparisons between an Athlon 3000+ and Pentium 4's running in the 2.6 - 3.2GHZ range. 32 Bit 3000+ Athlon's come in 3 basic flavors - a 266MHZ 3000+ Mobile, a 333MHZ Barton and a 400MHZ Barton. Got to run but will provide more info later when I get back if you have questions.

    Regards,
    ;)

Is a Celeron a Pentium 4? I want to compare the Celeron 2.66 with the AMD 3000+

The Celeron is not a full fledge Pentium - that is why it is not a fair comparison with the AMD Athlon XP3000+.

Its like even though Volkswagon and Porsche are made by the same company, you don't compare the Volkswagon with a Ferrari - you compare the Porsche with it.

Here is everything you wanted to know about just about every CPU.

    Thanks Bill
I think I get it now. Celeron's **** and AMD Athlon XP 3000+ don't. That is what I was looking for. I had a choice of these two processors and I didn't know which to pick. I'll pick the AMD!

Well the Celerons have their place, that is in budget Intel systems. They are still good processors. But if I had to choose between the two, I certainly would get the AMD too. But note, you must now get a motherboard that supports the AMD.

Bill, I am not building, these were 2 complete systems, 512mb Ram, 160gig HD, Keyboard, Speakers, Mouse, 1 Year warranty, XP Home, Microsoft Works, Microsoft Money and more software, all for $399.00 eMachine is the brand name. I might add, for the office I have purchase 6 eMachine's (all AMD but less than 2.66 or 3000+) and they are rock solid, had a defective CD-ROM and they came out and replaced it no charge.
