    Hi,
i have windows XP and i was in the add/remove programs place from control panel.
I was trying to remove windows messenger so I went to add/remove windows components. it then brought up a box with many "components ", about half of them ticked, i wasnt sure what i was supposed to do so i clicked next. it then had a progress bar saying it was configuring something, i didn't know what it was doing so i just clicked cancel.
ever since then, things have been acting strangely, can anyone tell me what i aborted, how it might be affecting stuff, and how i can fix it?
    thanks.

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click System Restore. Restory your system to a time prior to your "tinkering" with Add/Remove.

Obviously we have no way of knowing what you did if you didn't know yourself...

To remove Windows Messenger Service (the network one)
    Start>run services.msc.
Find messenger in the list, right click, then properties. Set to disable.

To remove Windows Messenger (the IM)
    Start>run
    Copy and paste
    RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

This a cut-n-paste from my notes (Credit WelshJim!)

    system restore

i recently had a worm and was instructed to turn off system restore while I scanned my computer with an anti-virus program. I forgot to turn it back on so i cant use system restore to go back.
is there no way I can just install everything on that list??

I seriously doubt that what you did caused any problem. You likely have something else at work on your system.

Just to be sure, go back and repeat your actions and this time let the system finish working without cancelling anything. All that it will do is load the Install Wizard and check for any added items that you selected (which will be none) and then finish without doing anything. As you can imagine, that wouldn't likely damage your system if you opted to cancel somewhere during the process.

You should check your system for any viral infection using the latest signatures for your AV program or else do an online scan. Perhaps do both.

Then check for Adware using Adaware or equal.
