Whenever I shut down OE, it automatically starts compacting folders. As this takes a long time I have to kill it to shut down. It has only just started doing this and I can't find any reason. Any suggestions for stopping it doing this gratefully received. I have OE 6 on XP SP2.

Check Tools > Options > Maintenance and UNcheck "Compact messages in background" if it is set.

Thanks WhitPhil. My Tools > Options > Maintenance does not have a "Compact messages in background" option. Only options relating to compacting refer to news messages.

    Any other suggestions?

    Interesting!
    I'm on XP Pro Sp1 OE6!
Unless you are on XP Home and there is a subtle difference in OE?
I can't see why SP2 would have been playing with this particular option??

But, given that is the way it is, this is the area where I would think you would find an option to disable this. Check through all of the other tabs and see if anything looks obvious.
Also, on the File > Folder option, which is where you can manually run it.

XP SP2 did remove the option from OE. It now prompts you to compact every 100 shutdowns of OE. Manual compacts do not affect the countdown.

    Wow!

Did you find that documented somewhere??

Also, your original post seemed to indicate that it happened on every shutdown!

It is only documented in the MS OE newsgroups that I am aware of.

I did not post the original topic. However I suspect that you must let the compact run to completion so that the counter can be reset. If not, it will try each time. There are registry entries which control this.

I couldn't find the options suggested by WhitPhil, and nothing else seemed to do anything. So, in desperation, I left it alone to compact, and as sunrisecc suggested, the problem went away. Nice of Microsoft to build in another feature that is a hindrance rather than a help, and not pubilicize it!

Many thanks to both sunrisecc and WhitPhil for your assistance.
