I'm trying to help someone I work with fix their WinME PC. They have cable internet but are unable to get to any web site in IE. I've installed, updated and run the current releases of SpyBot, Adaware, and CWShredder but they are still not able to get online. When you try to get to any web site in IE it just sits for a while and ends up saying the page cannot be displayed.

I am posting the log from Hijackthis in hopes there may be some other things that can be cleaned up that the other spyware stuff did not get. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

BillB - there is some trash in there that needs to go away but I'm not sure that is blocking the internet access.

Take a look at This thread with what sounds like a similar issue. Not sure if it has ever worked for this user but in any case, the ATT Broadband forum has some folks who can probably give you a good answer on that part of the issue.

As to the rest of the HJT listed items that need to go away, I'll take a pass on this since I'm not familiar with ME systems and my track record with them is not good.

    Hi Newt,

Thanks for the reply. I checked out the thread you mentioned and it contained some good suggestions, most of which I had already tried though.

I probably should have mentioned in my earlier post that this is an existing cable internet connection that stopped working sometime last week(what I was told was the PC has been getting slower and slower and the internet connection has been flaky, then stopped working altogether). The PC was loaded with spyware that was cleaned up by the spyware cleaners I mentioned, that's why I feel the problem may be related to something that they didn't find.

I did do some of the things menioned in the link you posted earlier today when at the PC, I disconnected the cable from the modem and PC and re-connected it, powered off the modem and PC and powered on the modem then the PC but it didn't help.

    Ah so. That does help.

A known side effect of some spyware removal is corruption of the IP stack handler. Try running LSPFix.

    Broni,

Thanks for the reply and help. I'm going to print this off and go over it and get with them on clearing up the things you mentioned. There is one thing at the end of the list you posted that I know will have to stay, the entry for Host on Demand. It is a web application that we have to use to have access to our mainframe computers from home. Other than that, looks like lots of stuff to remove. I will post a new log when this is done.

    Thanks again for the help.

    You are welcome.
O16 - DPF: Host On-Demand 4.0 - https://www.acsonline.com/hod/hodbase.cab looked suspicious to me, but now, thanks to you, I should know better. I overlooked "https" at that address, which should mean a secure site. Sorry for that.

    Broni,

Sorry to be so long posting back, I just got the new log from my friend. I don't think they deleted everything you suggested, but they did get rid of the things that you said to fix. Here is the new log, if you could post back and let me know if there is anything left to fix I'll pass it on. Thanks very much for the help.

Dont forget to mention any problems when posting logs we cannot see everything :)
Taking that into account i suggest they open pest patrol an turn off all its protections, dont have it start with windows, then surf half a day and post a new hijackthis log.

all i can add to whats already been suggested >

    Use msconfig and uncheck
    Updreg.exe
Multimedia Keyboard << not realy needed on win me.
    and Office10

If they disable Multimedia Keyboard I suggest you do, it saves on alot of resources

make a shortcut to OSD.EXE located here
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\NETROPA\ONSCREEN DISPLAY\OSD.EXE

and place it in the startup folder, its the onscreen volume display is all.
    ====================
Probaly the best thing he/she could do is uninstall norton !!
and change this >Internet Explorer v5.50

And SPYHUNTER has got to go,, promptly uninstall it !!

If you trust your friends to be carefull find and delete Only these exact files, related to Begin2Search

    Lonny,

Thanks very much for taking a look at this. The main problem they are having is not getting to the internet. They have cable internet but cannot get to any web page and email does not work. It apparently was getting progressively worse and then just quit altogether. They are bringing me the PC today so I will follow your recommendations and get those things done. They want me to get rid of Norton and install AVG, they got it using a neighbor's PC, so I will do that also. I'll post back with a new HJT log when done.

    Thanks again for the help.

    Bill

    Lonny,

I made the msconfig changes you suggested, created the shortcut for OSD, turned off the PestPatrol protection, deleted SpyHunter. I have the PC at my house so I'm not able to try surfing with it. I'm posting a new HJT log for you to see if anything else needs cleaning before I return it to them to try their internet access again.

The files you said to look for and delete were not there.

Again, thanks very much for looking at this for me.

    Lonny,

That sounds great. Im going to return the PC to them and have them try their internet access again. If it is still failing I think I'll have them talk to Comcast, in particular about the proxy settings. I have comcast internet service also and ran HJT to see if I had any listed. There is one on my list also that is similar to theirs, it may be just something that needs tweaking with the help of comcast support.

Thanks very much for the help on this, I really appreciate it.

    Bill

I've been using Comcast for a year and never had the proxy settings. Moved last week and had to get a new account. Also had to reinstall the comcast software, which added the proxy settings. Could not connect until I removed the proxy. Open IE Options in control panel and click connections tab, then LAN settings button. Uncheck use proxy and OK out. This will not remove the entries from the registry as does HijackThis (which makes backups so could be put right back anyway), but only disables them.

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for the reply. I checked the settings in IE and the use proxy wasn't checked.

I returned the PC yesterday and they told me today they are surfing again and email is working just fine. Many thanks to everyone for their help and replies.
