No one's mentioned the new SP2 IE popup blocker, I like it alot.

At the test sites below, run the tests both w/ and w/o your regular blocker and in combo as well.

Sites to test tough popup modes, including javascipt types:

    http://www.jasons-toolbox.com/BrowserSecurity/

    http://www.popup-killer-review.com/test.htm#

Note: Don't know whether to post here or in the IE forum, so just posted in the new section.

    Regards - Charles

charlesvar--I use the Google Toolbar. Seems to have stopped all but javascript popups in Jason's tests, and really do not want the hassle of all the IE popups if I were to disable those. I use what I think are the WinXP default settings on Scripting--enable, disable, enable.
How does the XP popup blocker handle javascript popups? (Or do you have javascript disabled or on prompt?)

    Hi Jim,

Do have javascript enabled, IE will stop those.

As for the popups from IE, I got it initially but told it not to do that anymore. When IE blocks, makes "noise" and adds a symbol next to the old restricted/internet site symbols. That disappears as soon as you're off the particular site.

    Jim,

Forgot to add that right clicking on that IE blocking symbol will re-open the blocking dialog - settings, temporary block?, and others.

    Charles,
I also like the pop up blocker better than any other popup blockers I've used before. I like the fact that you have easier control as to whats blocked and whats not. I still prefer to use the Internet Explorer Plugin "Avant Browser" (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2346.html) for a tabbed interface and the added features, but I've turned off Avant's popup blocker and let the new SP2 blocker do its thing.

    Hi Charles...

    Thanks for the links... :)

I also now use the new IE Popup stopper. I used to use Google's but like IE's much better now that I also use shortcuts for "Searches ". I used to use the "Google Search" window in the Google Toolbar all the time but found a web site by accident while serching for something else. This site showed you how to add Search Engines to the "SearchURL" in the Registry. What I ended up with is...

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchUrl\AV]
    @= "http://www.altavista.com/sites/search/web?q=%s "

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchUrl\Goo]
    @= "http://www.google.com/search?q=%s "

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchUrl\KB]
    @= "http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=%s "

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchUrl\MSN]
    @= "http://search.msn.com/results.asp?q=%s "

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchUrl\VIV]
    @= "http://vivisimo.com/search?query=%s&v%3Asources=Web "

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchUrl\YA]
    @= "http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=%s&ei=UTF-8&fr=FP-tab-web-t&cop=mss&tab= "

So now all I have to do for a Google Search on Outlook 2003 is type in the Address Window => goo Outlook 2003. Or for Alta Vista => av Outlook 2003

Works great. If you use TweakUI you can also add these Search shortcuts...
    1) Click "Start" button => Select "RUN "
    2) In "RUN" menu enter "TweakUI" (no quotes)
    3) In the left-hand menu expand "Internet Explorer" and select "Search "

Anyways I didn't mean to hijack your thread I was just trying to point out that with the new IE pop-up stopper and the search shortcuts I no longer need the "3rd Party" Google Toolbar anymore.

charlesvar--You are right (so what is new? :) ) The IE popupblocker stops more javascript activity than Google Toolbar. However, this time I was running both when I tried Jason's tests. So far no problems.

    Hi Jim,

I really like this IE, about time that MS responded to IE's more glaring shortcomings.

I posted a thread - can't find it at the moment - where a SP2 beta tester and user of firefox thought IE' blocker was better than the much extolled one built into firefox. Can't make a personal judgment about that, but this will probably "refuel" the browser arguements :)

I have not yet installed SP2 (minority language ...... ;) ......) but in Your situation, I would reinstall XP and then install SP2 immediately, before anything else. Everything that You install afterwards, should be removable. Check Programs that are known to experience a loss of functionality when they run on a Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer for any possible problem with Your programs.
