I was just wondering why does the windows security center say that Norton AntiVirus is installed but its status is "unknown "? I have done the Norton live update twice but still get this problem.

    It's just a little glitch with sp2.

Yup. Norton is fine but they (Symantec) just sorta forgot to update the program so SP2 would see it correctly.

If you are running NAV 2004 there is a patch available via Live Updates - if you are running NAV 2002/3 there is a patch due out at the end of the month.

Rest assured that NAV is still doing it's job.

Yep, Once the WMI patch is installed the Security center is instantly happy. :)

I had the WMI update for NIS/NAV 2003 through LiveUpdate this morning.

When installed, a popup window suggested turning Security Center notification off and I thought "what a fix" ...... ...... I did that months ago!

I went to SC and turned notification on (all three) and restarted the computer. It seems like SC is loading before Norton. I had a notification but it went away immediately. I went back to SC; AntiVirus and FireWall were listed as ON.

    Well, better late than never!

Thanks for the "heads up ", Christer. I got the new Norton WMI update this morning, and turned the Security Center back on, rebooted, and found that Norton had shut down the XP firewall. Hmmm... I have been running both for a long time, with no conflicts. I turned the XP firewall back ON, and received this message:
The Security Center icon doesn't appear in the Notification Area, but I suspect that is because I have "auto-update" for Windows turned OFF. Best I can tell, XP knows Norton is my AV program, and both firewalls (XP & Norton) are working. I will be doing a number of things today that will indicate whether or not these "conflicts" are going to be a problem, and will post back if I find one.

    Ain't Windows wonderful? :D

Got the WMI update for NAV2002 this morning and the message to turn off "redundant" security warnings as well.

Going into the SC via the control panel, XP now takes cognizance of NAV.

I checked TaskManager and found a new process running: SymWSC.exe and two additional components in LiveUpdate: IDS Program Updates and Norton WMI Update.

For me it was only SymWSC.exe which I promptly disabled. A new startup shows up in the startups as:

    Program : SSC_UserPrompt
    Filename : D:\program Files\common Files\symantec Shared\security Center\usrprmpt.exe
Description : Norton Security Center Helper
    Loaded From : HKEY_LM\Run

Also disabled. Stuff like this drives me up a wall :)

I stopped and disabled the new SymWMI Service and that made SymWSC.exe disappear from TaskManager.

Strange bunch we are, Charles, whining for months about not having it ...... ...... and when we get it we disable it!

What I object to is a new startup - why does letting XP know that NAV is running require a new process on startup? The answer is that it doesn't require a new process to be running to inform XP :p

I don't have SSC_UserPrompt in msconfig - autostart but maybe it went away when I disabled the SymWMI Service. I do have a new one, Logi_MwX.Exe, that I don't recognize. I will research it.

    Christer

Finished researching, it is the Logitech MouseWare ...... ...... should have figured that one out immediately.

    Hi Chrsiter,

I don't have SSC_UserPrompt in msconfig - autostart but maybe it went away when I disabled the SymWMI Service.

Possibly each "year" of Norton has either different processes or mix of processes that don't quite correspond. Mine is 2002 and if I remember correctly, yours is 2003.

It would be interesting to hear from other Norton users on this issue.

    Regards - Charles

    tlntsvr.exe
    wdfmgr.exe
    uwdf.exe
    symwsc.exe

all new processes, presumably from the update...haven't had time to check them out yet. NIS 2003.
