I have a Win2000 SP4 machine with Norton AV (systemworks). I would like to install the free Zone Alarm. When installing, should I accept the default installation? I am new to this, so I know I will have to do a lot of reading once installed, but I want to make sure I install the proper components. Is there anything I should be aware of that I might not understand upon installation?

Thanks again to everyone on these boards -- more help here than anywhere!

    Hi Jeane,

If this is v4.5, yes accept the default.

You did ask in a previous post about which version to install because you had some misgivings - rightly so - about v5.0

This is probably a dumb question,

I downloaded what I thought was the FREE ZA 4.5.594.000 but did not install yet. When I right clicked on it and selected properties, it showed as ZA Pro. Why is that? When I go to the ZA website and click on download Free ZA, it takes you to 5.0.

    Hi Jeane.

I gave you the url for the free 4.5 in the earlier Zone Alarm thread you started on this Board.

Scroll down to here on that web page:

4.5.594.000. was released to the public on April 12, 2004. For changes in this version, click here. To download this version, click here

    The files name: zls.Setup_45_594_000

The pro file's name would begin with: zapSetup.....

    Regards - Charles

When you download the Free ZA you also get the opportunity to have a trial period of ZA Pro, want it or not. When you install the ZA program, at some point a window will appear that offers to install ZA ProTrial. You will see all the check marks on what Pro will do that Free will not. Select the Free edition and it will download. The Pro version is a Trial and they sneaked in in hoping you would try it!

edit: That feature was in the version you have as well as ZA 5.

    Hi Jeane,

    How did this turn out?

Once installed, in the preferences tab, there is a "notify for new updates" button which by default is checked for auto notification. Change that to manual, otherwise you'll be "notified" every time you connect to the web to upgrade to v5.0

BTW: if you have comments/questions on the same topic, use the same thread for posting, that way everyone can see the history.

I haven't used the free version since the 2.x days - so I don't know what they do these days.

    Regards - Charles
