Users running ONLY the AV versions 2000 to 2003,

What I’m looking for is whether that update created a Task Scheduler entry that looks something like this: check for updates "starting at 12.05 AM for 24 hours every day, starting 05/14/2004 ".

EDIT: the Task Scheduler entry is called Symantec NetDetect.

The date may vary, depending on when the update occurred.

It also added this startup item: SNDMon.exe (Symantec NetDriver Monitor).

This thread is the immediate impetus for this question: http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=32511 last 3 posts

    Where it all started:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=30524 NAV Redirector thread

Where I got the idea of what this update was for:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=31618 Norton aggravated thread

As far as I can tell, Symantec is keeping this a big “secret†– I can’t find this info on their site, nor on all the forums and posts about the related havoc that Symantec caused for a good number of NIS users referenced in my NAV Redirector thread.

    Regards - Charles

    Using NIS 2003
    SNDMon.exe created 5/21/04 2:59PM by Live Update
Best I can tell, no other Symantec files were created this day. I had no problems. Just checked now, and it is in the Start Up menu. I did do a manual LU a week or two ago that required a reboot, but I don't remember what it was?

Nothing in Task Scheduler other than regular virus scan and the standard Symantec NetDetect.

As soon as I get the kids off their comp (NIS 2002) I'll check the logs there and post back.

    Thanks Johanna.

NetDetect is the crux of this - that's what I didn't have before.

This issue got lost or never noticed - I didn't notice it - in the problems surrounding NIS.

NetDetect was part of the original NIS install (on my comp, last crash 10/04/03!) In the task scheduler, it is set to check every 5 minutes. That is definitely new. I don't recall seeing it in StartUp before, either, but I usually just leave Norton alone, anyway, so I wasn't paying good attention.

I'll be interested in what you find out.

Great, that seems, pending furher confirmation, to be one of the changes for all Symantec users then.

Hi Charles: I am running NAV 2001 Version 7.07.23D and have no SNDmon.exe in the startup or on the computor. So it seems LU did not create it for this version.

    Cheers. :D

    Hi John,

    What's your LiveUpdate version?

Luupdate.exe in Program files > Symantec > Liveupdate folder

As far as I know, NetDetect has always been a part of the firewall part of NIS, but it used to be set for four hours. Every 4 hours it would use the always on cable connection to check for updates. Maybe this is supposed to be an improvement? On the internet, 4 hours is a long time!

    Hi Johanna,

Yes, the help file in NAV2002 says 4 hrs.

I think what's different here is giving users the ability to schedule those intervals if not liking the default of every 5 min. That would be an improvement, PROVIDED users knew about it!

If you track how often Symantec issues virus updates - as a rule once a week on WED's, oftener for critical virus alerts - every 5 minutes seems a might excessive.

Charles, my luupdate.exe is Version 2.0.39.0 Created Jan. 7/04 and the interesting thing is it shows as being modified Jan. 2/04, two days before it was created.

I try to keep my NAV right up to date and check LU almost every day, several times a day. Run it manually as I am on dial-up. Allow it to update whatever it wants, so far have had no problems. (over three years) I have NAV2004 disk, but am hestitant to install, as 2001 works just fine with my system and a lot of users seem to have problems with 2004. Only disadvantage is that 2004 scans outgoing e-mail whereas 2001 does not. I (and my wife, hopefully) are very careful about opening attachements, etc. and so far have been lucky :) and have not had any virus problems. Also run all the anti-spyware stuff on a regular basis, and firmly believe this really helps keep system as clean as can be.

Dave posted a link that got me here.

    A user reports:
    (Time warp??)

and an interesting explanation by Reese Anschultz
    Symantec Corporation

    (Emphasis Mine)

I think they are still sorting it all out!

Never mind, CharlesVar none of this is news to you... (I mean, how many Charlesvars can there be??)
