Hey, this may sound like a stupid question, but we are having a problem sending mail. This occured when my daughter came to visit and wanted to do some e-mailing using my computer.

People can do that I thought - but we can't.

Here is the roadblock we encountered:

    Using Windows XP Pro
    Using Windows Outlook Express

My daughter knew the E-mail address and wanted to send mail "from her ".

Outlook Express will not accept or allow the typing in the sender's ID in the "From" field.

Are we wrong (have been lots of times !) or is Outlook Express restricted to
my "accounts" only. I have 5 set up. The allowable limit.

I certainly don't want her sending mail "From Me" using any of my accounts.
She uses a different mail provider anyway.

So, just how does someone use another computer and send mail to folks and have it come from them (not from the computer owner) ?

    Any suggestions ?

    Thanks

I'm not sure what you mean by "the allowable limit." I've set up as many as 7 accounts in the same identity in Outlook Express without problems.

Another account for your daughter will need to be set up. I suggest you set up an identity for her in Outlook Express so her mail will be kept separate from yours.

In Outlook Express, go to File>Identities>Add New Identity, step through the wizard, filling out the information it needs. When it asks if you want to "Switch to the New Identity Now," tell it yes.

Then, in the new identity, go to Tools>Accounts and set up an email account for her, using her email address, password and POP3 and SMTP information exactly as it is in her email account on her computer. Of course, that means she needs to know all that information. ;)

Her email server doesn't care where she is logging in from, her computer at her home using her internet connection or your computer at your home using your internet connection, it only cares that the username and password are correct.

When she wants to check her mail, she can go to File>Switch Identities, switch to her identity, and retrieve her email. Then back to File>Switch Identities to switch back to your identity.

She will need an account set up in OE and it will need to point to her ISP. Shouldn't be a problem if she knows the needed setup information (pop and smtp addresses and her account info).

Not sure but I think if she has a logon account on the PC she will get a clean start with OE and can set up another account even though you have the max on yours. Not positive though and can't play with it from work. If no one else can say for sure, I can play around on my PC at home and find out.

In order for her to send mail from her ISP, she must be signed on to her isp. If you set her up with a dialup connection to her account, she can send from your computer as herself.

Your ISP won't allow mail to be sent from a different domain using your domain.

Another solution is to set up a web based email account like hotmail or another of the thousands available. She can go to Hotmail from any computer and send to anyone she wants.

I have accounts set up in my OE from other domains but I can only receive mail, not send.

I guess my ISP is different. Its mail server doesn't care how you connect, as long as it gets the correct username and password, it's happy.

When I open OE, it checks my mail at my cable ISP and my dial up ISP. When I send mail, OE just wants to know which account I'm sending from. Like Miz said, as long as the username and password is correct, the mailserver will send or receive the mail.

    JBarker,
Set up a user account for your daughter, and let her configure her own OE. When she wants to check her email, she can use the "fast user switching" and go into her identity. Control Panel> User Accounts> create a new account.

It sounds as if her situation with you is temporary. My ISP will keep the mail on the server, which is very handy when I'm traveling. I can read what I need to, delete any spam, and when I get home, OE downloads all of the remaining mail onto my computer, even if I've downloaded it on someone else's computer, or read it from the web. I seem to remember a tweak (in TweakUI, maybe?) to retain mail on the server, too, but I'll have to look for it.

    Johanna,

Regardless ISP's server side option, OE has an option not to delete the mail on the server after downloading it. you can find this option in tools/accounts/your account/advanced tab.

A screen shot of this option is here :)

Thank you for the reminder. That's probably the tweak I was thinking of in the first place. My ISP deletes mail on the server automatically after 14 days, but in the setting you pointed out, there are a number of ways to configure how mail is handled on the server- including delete with deleted items (Think I'm gonna go back and tick that box! :) )

    Good thinking!

Cannot type in just any old name !

    Thanks for the answers.

And it is as we suspected it would be.

You cannot type in the "sender" when using e-mail.

That area is for the original account owner's name.
