Why is it that, after deleting everything in the 'Deleted items' box sometimes, and it is only sometimes, many of the old messages are resurrected when I next boot up.

Not amajor issue, but certainly an irritation!

alanrf--How are you deleting the Deleted Items messages?
In OE6 one standard way is OE Tools|Options|Maintenance tab|check the box| "Empty Messages from the Deleted Files folder on exit "|Apply|OK. (And it can be done immediately OE Edit| "Empty Deleted Files Folder ") On the same Maintenance tab, checking the box "Compact Messages in the background" should make sure they will not reappear. (Or to be sure it is done right away, OE File|Folder|Compact)
However, just as with emptying your Recycle Bin, deleted items are still on the hard drive until overwritten. That is why programs like DBExtract (in the case of OE email messages) work--sometimes ;).

    You have a point!

Usually, (no, always), I delete the contents by selecting the folder, highlighting all entries and then selecting 'Delete'. Perhaps this may explain the inconsistency? I'll try the other methods for a time and see if it changes the pattern.

Highlight one message in Deleted Items
    Control + a (select all)
    press "delete" on your keyboard

    or

Click edit, choose "Empty deleted Items Folder" like Jim described.

if the problem persists, locate the deleted items dbx file and delete it. OE will recreate it. Do a search for .dbx to find it.

    Thanks for the advice!

I'll wipe the dbx file and see how it goes in future.

It's possible that your not removing the mail from your email server, so on reboot, it just downloads the mail again.

    Good thought, aleekat.
alanrf--You find that setting at OETools|Options|Accounts|Properties|Advanced (Delivery at the bottom).

No, that item is already unchecked.

Once I download the mail my server records are wiped off. In any case any re-dump would go into the Inbox rather than the Deleted file presumably.

Fingers crossed, nothing has risen from the depths for a couple of days.
