This update crippled my system, beware.
It caused my system to run very slow, it took over an hour to remove the update.

    Wierd...

I'm running WinXP Pro on both on my home computers and also my work computer. I installed this patch when it came out on all 3 of these PC's and have have no ill effects at all.

I did notice, doing a Google search on the subject, that most of the users who have experienced your problem were Win2000 SP3 and SP4 users.

Installed this on 3 work SP4 PC's on 20/4 without ill affect. But it's alway a good idea to keep track of update installations (where possible) for any problems.

Good idea to open a case with Microsoft Support about the issue. They can probably figure out what went wrong and get it fixed and if there is a problem with this Kb and some systems, they certainly need to know about it.

It will be a free/no-charge support issue for you.

I called microsoft, the tech knew exactly which update was causing the problem, he said it didn't seem to be affecting everyone. My PC was running so slow it took 1.5 hours to back the update out.

    Me too: details

    Hooboy.
have an up-to-date Windows 2000 on a Vaio laptop FX215, 256 MB RAM. When Windows Update recently told me to install 4 critical updates, I did. My system started to run about 10,000% slower (no exaggeration, boot took 1 hour.) This continued until I backed out KB835732 (in Safe Mode, which was affected much less). When I reinstalled KB835732 it happened again. Task Manager showed:
--the system was 100% busy almost all the time
--the process that was busy was "System ", getting over 95% of the CPU
--the "non-paged" kernel memory was near 100 MB, instead of 15 MB like normal.

    I uninstalled again.

Since KB835732 is necessary to avoid Sasser worm, one is between a rock and a hard place. Luckily my firewall seems to protect me from Sasser attack.

Luckily the call for hot fixes not posted to open internet locations (like this one) is free. They will just give you a location you can download it from to install.

The KB835732 Hotfix caused a slightly different problem for me.

After I installed it on a Win2K SP4 PC, I could no longer get Updates from the MS Windows Update site.

I would start the scan, after a short time an error page would appear saying (in part):

Windows Update has encountered an error. This may be due to a discrepency in your computer's time setting.
    ....

Send error number to Microsoft (0x800C0008)
Note This sends error information but does not create a support incident, you may or may not receive a response.

I clicked the link to send the error number, and then I tried to open a support incident on the Support website, but my incident submissions never seem to actually go through and it is always a pain to find the page for submitting support incidents.

When I removed Hotfix KB835732, then I was again able to use the Windows Update site.

Currently, I have one uninstalled critical hotfix, namely KB835732.

To date I have not been able to successfully open an incident, and I have not received any response from MS Support for my previous unsuccessful attempts.

mam - would you please post a copy of this in the General Discussions support poll thread (pinned to the top).

I'll be presenting a copy of that thread to groups of M$ support folks on the 18th and 20th of this month (about 75 people each time).

I think they need to know this sort of thing is happening and I'm guessing someone will have a fix to offer.

    mam,

You are getting INET_E_DOWNLOAD_FAILURE. Its failing during the manifest download. 99% of the time this means you have some spyware/adware installed. Check out Lavasofts adaware program, and scan your system. Remove the garbage and try the hotfix again. If its still malfunctioning, get it in state and give Microsoft tech support a ring.

    JoeHobart,

    Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunatly, it does not appear to be a spyware issue. I downloaded and ran AdAware 6.0. It found 38 "Tracking Cookies" and I quaranteened all of them.

I then reinstalled KB835732, rebooted and went to the MS Update website again.

When trying to scan my system to determine which update(s) are available, the scan continues to fail with error code 0x800C0008.

So, when you say "get it in state and give Microsoft tech support a ring ", do you mean call them. The issue occurs on my PC at work, and if I read the support information correctly I will have to pay $99 to get a MS support person to help me.

mam - make sure your Ad-aware version is 6.181 (click on the "i" symbol at the top of the ad-aware screen) and that you have the latest update to their ref files from yesterday.

Also give a go with Spybot. I really like the 1.3 version they just released. Uninstall any earlier version before installing 1.3.

If both of those come back clean and you still have the same issue, then you will pretty well be assured it isn't a spyware issue.

I'm not positive but I would think that an issue with updates not installing on a fully supported OS would more likely be a free support call unless you have an OEM system where OS support is supposed to be by the vendor.

Hmmm. One other thing.. Can you go to other SSL sites with the patch on? What is the time/date on your machine? If its off too far, the certificate authentication will fail.

What happens when you type this link in the browser? It should spew some XML back at you. (look for errors down in the status bar) https://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/getmanifest.asp

You get 2 freebie incidents with the product. If you have already used those, then it might cost you to work with tech support. The way that generally works is that you pay up front, and if it turns out to be a bug, then they refund your money. Since its for work, you might want to check with your IT department to see if there is a support contract in place you can leverage. I cringe to know you're running unpatched!

I downloaded and tried Spybot. It did find some Registry entries that Ad-aware 6.181 had missed.

I allowed Spybot to remove all the items that I did not know about and lo, I am now able to get updates from the MS Update site.

    Thank you very much.
