Hi all - I hope someone can help!
I have Win Xp with 1800xp, 750meg DDR, Geforce3 and an ECS K7S5A mobo.
Occassionally I would get a message on POST saying checksup invalid (or similar) so I go to BIOS and reset the clock, Graphic WIN size and change CPU speeds settings to 133/133 as they had reset at 100/100 - this always solves problem. However this time it has not, I can now only boot to safe mode, when trying to load normally I just get a black screen, no errors or anything. Unfortunately, I disabled System Restore and you cannot enable it in Safe Mode (anyone know if I can do enable this somehow??) anyway I think once disabled it loses the pervious restores??
I alo notice that my Geforce3 fan does not come on when I try to load XP, or even when Safe Mode is loaded - is that unusual?
I have reinstalled GFX drivers (latest) and reset CMOS as well as trying to load at 100/100 clock settings - no luck.
Any ideas would be gratefull;y received.

By the way - I had not installed anything before this happened - just using PC Friday night, then this on Sat..I have also run chkdsk in Safe Mode, this closes almost immediately when it reaches 100% (I guess that means it finds no errors).

I noticed someone had a similar problem and was advised to clear System and App logs and restart (which will fail and hopefully write some logs) then restart in Safe Mode to check the events:
Well here are the Application errors:
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine CoCreateInstance. hr = 0x80040206. and
The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal processing. HRESULT was 8007043C from line 44 of d:\nt\com\com1x\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services to report this error.

    And the System Errors:
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
    BANTExt
    Fips
    Processor

    and
DCOM got error "This service cannot be started in Safe Mode " attempting to start the service EventSystem with arguments " " in order to run the server:
    {1BE1F766-5536-11D1-B726-00C04FB926AF}
I think this last message was created when I tried the normal boot which failed, the others probably the safe mode boot after that.

Those problems are probably interrelated, but not necessarily.

I'd check the fan on the GeForce. It should run at power up and overheating could have caused chip damage and boot errors on hardware detection. See if it spins freely by gently spinning it. Dust and especially cigarette smoke can affect these small fans easily. I periodically remove these small fans, clean with WD-40 in the bearings, and lubricate with a thin lithium lubricant. If the chip has overheated, you may need to replace the card, or try another.

Also, check your CMOS battery. That could account for lost settings.

If the installation has been damaged by these incomplete boots, a repair installation looks like the choice to recover what you have.

Silvercue I have an Elite K7S5A motherboard and since I installed it I too have been blighted with the checksum message, I believe that there is a general problem with this and this board ( I have heard rumors elsewhere) perhaps Elite themselves can help. However it has never stopped me booting after resetting date/ time etc. A new battery did not help me but you never knowas it may be a really cheap fix for you.

Many thanks for the replies guys - I had to re-install Win XP in the end, which I really did not want to do as all critical updates etc need re applying. It solved the problem though and I have now re-enabled System Restore.
