    Typical MS behaviour. No logic.

Today I have used the media creation tool to download the latest version of Windows.iso, whose size is 3,625,910,272bytes.
Last month I downloaded the old version 10.0.10240, whose size was also 3,625,910,272bytes.
How can I know that the one downloaded today is different from the one downloaded last month?
I have already installed version 1511 by Windows Update. I want to burn Windows.iso onto a DVD.

If you read the article Bobbo linked to you will see that the 1511 ISO has been removed and replaced with the original ISO ....

Both your ISO's are the same.

After clicking the link, scroll down towards the bottom:

Yesterday, I downloaded and used that tool to create a bootable USB-drive and also an ISO to burn to DVD. It produced a different version to that I created in September. On the respective USB-drive, I checked the version of setup.exe:

    September > 10.0.10240.16384
    Yesterday > 10.0.10586.0

I have seen no mention of "1511" anywhere on the USB-drive with the "10.0.10586.0" version.

That makes things inconvenient for users who have to reinstall version 1511.

It would also download the original ISO. The updated ISO's have been removed.

No! I have successfully downloaded the updated ISO file, i.e. version 1151, which is different from the original ISO.

    Give it a go!

I was just thinking that this was a messed up update. I've had more problems than a virus.

Luckily, I had no problem updating to 1511 via Windows Update.

I updated two machines to 1511 before it was removed from the web site. I had a driver problem on one and took care of it by uninstalling and restarting the computer. I haven't had any other problems since then. Today I started my laptop that hadn't been updated, checked, and installed the updates. I looked at the version and it was NOT 1511. I checked for more updates and it reported that it was up to date. Now I don't know whether to update via the link mentioned above or not.

Just read a tweet from Mary Jo Foley that the 10586 update has been restored.

    wjburl,

    Which link did you use?

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 is said to no longer download the 10586 tool but the previous 10240 tool.

The link further down, towards the bottom is said to still work:

    http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/C/4/1C41BC6B-F8AB-403B-B04E-C96ED6047488/MediaCreationTool.exe

A few minutes ago, I tested both links and received the 10586 tool from both. See the attached screenshot.

It seems like the tail is wagging the dog!

I haven't tried any link on my laptop. I used the check for updates in settings. If it doesn't update on it's own in the next day or two, I'll try the Media Creation tool.

The link near the bottom is not the one above but the one below.
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=691209

Does it mean that Microsoft has put 1511 back?

Luckily, there is nothing wrong with mine after updating.
However, I saw something wrong on other forums.

I have no idea why the links are different. I copied and pasted from the article, linked to in post #1.

Yes, it seems like that. There's a mix of "version" and "build ". The "version" is "1511" based on year and month of release. The "build" is "10586" as indicated in the properties of the file.
