On startup I get as far as the desk top and cannot get into any programs,
can't even restart from the Windows button; have to turn off pc and restart from button on tower and I know that's not a good thing to do. Have not installed or updated any new programs.

When it gets to the desktop have you let it sit there for several minutes to see if you can then do things?

Or try starting it in Safe Mode? Usually one of the "F" keys or could be the DEL key.

Hi Eleanor316. Did this issue happen recently? Can you open Task Manager when the computer hangs? Does the computer work normally if you boot it into Safe Mode?

Sometimes wait a few minutes, other times as soon as desktop and task bar are up, doesn't make any difference.

It opens in safe mode but don't want to use it that way.

Happened in past, but more often past week. Can't open task bar when it hangs.

Didn't say you had to use it that way. Did it boot right up in Safe Mode with no problems?

If you can get into safe mode the first time, you have something that is trying to load that is taking a long time.
Look in the Task Manager and see what is running when you boot up and don't open anything but the task manager.

Lets see what is starting up with your machine.

Please download Autoruns. After you download the zipped folder on your desktop, right click the zipped folder and click Extract All. After the folder has been extracted open the regular folder. Run the autoruns.exe program by right clicking on it and selecting Run as administrator. When you open the program click the Logon Tab and then post a screenshot of all the startup entries in your next reply.
