I did the second instruction in the SevenForums how-to to get the pesky Explorer 'details pane' to stay open.

Somehow I have it closed and no amount of merging the .reg file I downloaded to accomplish it has succeeded.

Please review the procedure. It should be a simple matter of opening the options, selecting layout and clicking on details. Nothing seems to change it one way or the other now. It is off.

A side note is that somehow the .reg momentarily broke my homenet workgroup connection to my Windows XP machine. Running 'Join a Network" in the XP seems to have solved that problem.

The problem began when I was trying to get rid of the 'Preview Pane." That looks like it is turned off. But no indication of these changes (the check mark indicator) shows up in the "layout" selections.

I had never known about any of this until today-- didn't need any adjustments.

    To review:

First I tried to go Options > Layout > Select Details Pane

    failed

and then went through the download you have of the .reg to turn the details pane on.

    Failed.

I tried to drag the left border as well but no Details pane yet.

You mean login as someone else?

lon and administrator are the same or have the same permissions.

These machines are used only by me.

If I can login as admin I think I can do that. No passwords or other
    restrictions should apply.

    What are we looking for?

One thing I usually try is a System Restore.

But I have no restore point available on the Win7. Is it possible to pull it
from somewhere else such as my clone backup? I just noticed a reference to that when trying to run restore.

The restore is something I've only had to use in XP.

And my homenet work seems to be not finding the XP machine again.

I can live without the 'details pane' if I can get my normal homenet to stabilize.

Win7 reinstall does not work the same as XP. I've never had good success with reinstall of Win7 rather than just install from scratch.

These are just things I have done to rectify past errors. Advise on the suitability of any.

Do you have the built in administrator account enabled? If not see this link, Enable the (Hidden) Administrator Account on Windows 7, 8, or 10.

See if the same behavior occurs with the administrator account enabled.

Did that registry tweak that I linked to earlier help at all? Did the details pane work before or did you make some other changes that caused the details pane to quit working?

Yes I did the download and install of the turn windows details on.

That is the point I have as the start of these system problems.
Before we go further, How can I remove that reg. entry?

Once that is done I'd feel better about making a restore point.

I will also look at your latest link about admin permissions.

Before making any changes you should have backed up your registry first.

Well can it be retrieved from my clone backup made a couple weeks ago-- copy from one to the other?

    This thread can be closed.

However please provide a how-to link for a fresh install of Win7 that includes initial restore point.

Unlike XP it is called a backup image or something. Because of this I overlooked making any sort of initial restore point and am using a Win7 with no Restore capability. Don't tell me to look at the how-tos again. I explained above that the C: is _not found_ when loading those screens.

Here you go, How to Do a Clean Installation with Windows 7.

What are you referring to? Can you please explain and be more specific with what you are asking?
