Hi Eleanor316. Vipre is already an antivirus program so I don't know why you are asking this question when you have an antivirus program installed.

Are you thinking about switching to a different antivirus program or has Vipre been good enough for you to use?

My son who is an IT processional doesn't use AV - says I don't need it; my other son and son-in-law who are very pc savvy don't use AV either.
    What is your opinion?

Wow! I'm amazed that an IT Pro doesn't use or recommend an Anti-Virus Program for a lay-person surfing the Internet.
Your Windows 7 has Defender built in which can be replaced by Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) and Defender is the Default AV in Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.
If you run W8.1 or W10 you would need to stop Defender as it operates by (Default) in the OS.
I would suggest you look in the Malware and Virus Forum and see how regularly people get caught with Viruses, Trojans and Malware. Neil.

Got to agree with you on this. Like playing Russian Roulette with only one shell out and not with just one shell in.

You can drop anti virus if you are using Linux. Windows require it.

Thanks for the replies. I will continue to use Vipre and Malwarebytes. My sons can fend for themselves. :)

Windows DOES NOT require it. Works fine without it.

You don't NEED an antivirus program but you must accept the consequences of that decision and understand the risks of being unprotected from malware.

Eleanor316, would you consider this thread resolved?

Do you think that Linux is immune to get a virus?

Ordinarily, yes. Simply because of the low number of linux systems out there and also because the majority of the systems out there are used as some sort of servers with very strict usage list & access controls.

15 years ago maybe, but infecting servers to use them in bot/spam networks has been quite popular this decade.

And almost all of it can be traced back to not updating the system with patches or not upgrading your software. Anti virus software has very little,if any, role to play in it.
