10 Upgrade questions.

I have 2 Win 8.1 computers up to date, I signed up yesterday for the upgrade, one of my computers is logged into Microsoft on boot up, the other one has a "local" account status, and does not log into a Microsoft account.

What am I missing here, Microsoft has some kind if incentive to give this away for free, and I would like to know the insider story on it before I jump on the bandwagon.

Will my applications work with 10, all are compatible with 8.1. Will they stay installed? Or do I have to reinstall the few apps I have on each computer? Will my local account on my laptop still be valid? Or do I have to submit to logging into a Microsoft account.
