I'm waiting for a new router to arrive so mean while I tried to connect a Windows 7 Laptop via an Ethernet connection. I have Cox Cable Internet. I can't connect via LAN and when I do the troubleshoot to fix the problem it says: "Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration. The Laptop is set to automatically detect settings. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If your existing router is bad, and you have the Cox modem, you must remove the power cord & ethernet cable from the modem, wait about 10 seconds, reconnect the power and wait until the modem syncs (about 30 seconds). Then connect the ethernet cable. The modem MUST be "recycled" every time a router is connected or disconnected.

Your modem's DHCP may not be enabled. You have to enable the DHCP in your modem. Or if you know the IP address of the modem, you could manually configure your laptop.

COX residential service modems all use DHCP. Their business class service modems use static IP addresses. COX modem settings are not accessible by the user. If have COX business Internet service you will have to call support and find out the assigned static IP address, then set that address manually in Network & Sharing Center > Change adapter settings.

Tony, you are talking about the WAN side of things whereas I am talking about the LAN side of things.
