    Can any one recommend a good usb wireless adapter that will work with windows 8.1. Every one I have bought ends up crashing my laptop.. thanks in advance..

    It only gets 40meg down when my connection is almost 70meg. That's what all my other wireless device are getting even my windows 7 desktop with a netgear adapter are getting.

    What is your Product Number(P/N). Example WF123UA#ABA. Never mind found it E0J75UA. Is this what you have Realtek RTL8188EE 802.11bg/n 1x1 WiFi adapter? What are the other wireless devices?

    Yes that is what I have. The others are are all wireless usb devices even the desktop and even my phone all are getting around 66 down and 4 up. I even plugged the laptop into the earthen net port and got the 66 down and 4 up. Just on the built in wifi I get 40 dn and 3.5 or so up.

    40 down & 3.5 up are pretty good rates for wifi. Verify your adapter is set to use 80211n and not 80211g. You should be able to access its advanced settings via Device Manager.

    It's not giving me the option to set it at 80211n just auto 80211b or 80211b/g

    That realtek adapter is made for HP computers. Any usb adapter should work but you'll have to do a few steps prior to using one:

    1. go to device manager and disable the on board realtek.
    2. uninstall any HP wifi software & drivers via add-remove programs.
    3. uninstall any other HP network management software if exists. (hp usually bundles a lot of unnecessary junk system managements stuff)
    3a. check Control Panel > Admin Tools > Services and disable any HP network stuff.
    4. connect the new usb adapter.
    5. install the most recent available drivers for it (check manufacturer site for newest version)

    So plug the new adapter in first after disabling the on board one ? And deleting any hp management stuff. I knew about the disabling the on board on.. but never thought about the hp stuff. The directions said to down load the software first. I guess you learn something new every day.

    I did every thing you said Tony and all seems good I am getting 12 ms ping 66.85mbps down and 4.36mbps up so much better than the 40 with the built in one.

    Well done!

    FYI, standard operating procedure with usb devices is to first connect them and then install drivers. Other devices & ports do the reverse order.

    Also, that realtek chipset has been troublesome for HP Windows users, works OK on Linux.

    That's what I was reading about that chipset. I had a lot of trouble with the audio as well and it's a Realtek as well. But thanks again for all the help.
