    It is optional as you say. If you take the checks out when you install it, you won't get the Bing Bar and MSN home page. Or at least you shouldn't.

    Note: Skype will automatically be updated only on PCs on which Skype is already installed. Skype will not automatically be updated on any PC that doesn’t already have Skype installed.

    Most of the people have set the Windows update to Auto. That would download & install it without any intervention on the user's part along with all the garbage.

    I wonder why MS had to stoop so low ?

    I don't know that that's true, especially for those who frequent this BBS.

    In any case, if updates are set to download but not install, it's easy to hide any you don't ever want to install, such as KB2876229 .... just right-click and select "Hide this update" (I'm paraphrasing here); you'll never see them again.

    I also hide what I do not want. MS insists that I install an important update for my integrated AMD ATI Radeon switchable graphics, but it not compatible.
