I have reinitialised an HP Pavilion 9500 laptop from the Recovery Partition. This went okay and the laptop is working fine, everything works.

I am now trying to reinstall the Service Packs and have used both Windows Update and downloaded the SP1 and SP2 from the Microsoft Support site.

Windows Update has installed parts of SP1, I assume, because it keeps telling me over and over that there are updates to be installed, but the only one is SP1 and every time I tell it to go ahead, it seems to stall. Here follows an edited version of the History:

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (KB936330)

There are a total of 6 entries for SP1 in the History listing. Is SP1 being installed 1 file at a time? How can I possibly get SP1 installed so I can install SP2? I have checked in System Information and SP1 is not showing as installed, so there is more to come!

    Any suggestions gratefully received.

Hi arthur277. The first thing I would try would be to perform a clean boot in Windows by following the instructions from here, How to perform a clean boot in Windows.

What version of Windows Vista is installed?

Evan OMO what a star you are - straight to the nub of the problem. Thank you very much.
Vista Home Premium 32 bit is the OS installed.

I did a restore first as the laptop was very slow and got hung up with a boot time defrag program. I then did a clean boot and got rid of the offending program. I had already downloaded the updates so ran the files. Apart from taking a few hours SP1 and SP2 installed perfectly all by themselves.

After going back to the clean boot screens I reset the computer to do a normal load of all drivers and programs. This worked fine and then I went back to Windows Update - 155 updates required!!!!! On trying to download these updates, the computer has just sat there saying 'Downloading Updates' but not downloading anything.

Perhaps I have to do updates after a clean boot??

Keep the computer running in the clean boot state and then see if the other 155 updates or so install successfully.

If you run into problems installing those updates then let me know and I can give you some suggestions to try.

Thanks for the advice, Evan Omo. All Windows updates have now been installed and the problem was I did not give the computer long enough to assemble the updates, I guess. Too fed up with sitting around waiting for things to happen. It has been a very long twenty four hours that I have been trying to get this laptop back up and ready to run fully 'updated and protected' - as I always stress to my students!

I have learnt a few things about installing updates and Service Packs, so thank for your help. I think we can mark this one resolved now.
