I suddenly found the network changed to public and nothing I do will get it to revert to home except going through the process of joining a homegroup.

Regardless of joining a homegroup and choosing Home network when given the option, I have no internet connection.

    Network and sharing center shows
    Unidentified Network
    Home network

Access Type - No internet access
    Homegroup - Joined
    Connections - Local area connection

    but, I am not online.

If I run the troubleshooter, it changes the network to a public network and I get Local area connection doesn't have a valid IP configuration - haven't found an online solution for that one either

I have unplugged the router for 10 mins. Did a hard reset on the router. The computer was turned off at the time.

I have tried all the suggestions that I can find online.
    The MS fixit doesn't

This is a fresh install of Win 7 Pro today. Updated but I didn't create a restore point as I hadn't loaded in all of my programs.

Any ideas short of doing a repair install?

    Thanks

    Hi cspgsl,
Have you tried with the computer switched on?
I've always carried out Router/Modem Resets with the comp on and operating.
Did you try this and did you try it manually?

Windows 7 Network connections are stuck in Public mode

Expand - Let me Fix it myself. Neil.

    Yes, thanks.

I tried the do it yourself version and reset with the computer both off and on.

Hi cspgsl. What is your computers IP address on your LAN? Click Start< in the Start Search box type cmd and right click on cmd and select Run as administrator.

When the command prompt window opens type ping followed by the IP address of your router. See if you get a successful ping result.

Are you connected to your network via a wired or wireless connection?

Open up the Command Prompt window again and type ipconfig /all and press enter.

Post the results in your next reply please.

The 169 IP address assigned to the interface is because of automatic private IP addressing (APIPA). It's used because the DHCP process did not receive a valid usable IP address.

You are not connected to your router since I don't see an IP address of your router which is the default gateway.

Click Start< Control Panel< Network and Internet< Network and Sharing Center< Change Adapter Settings. Right click on your LAN and click on Properties. In the Properties window highlight IPV4 and click on Properties.

Make sure the settings are set like in my screenshot below.

    they are marked that way.

I have a bit more info which I never thought to add (sorry) - your comment "not connected to your router" brought it to mind. I have the computer connected through a wired router that is set up as a switch (DHCP off). The input to the "switch" is from my router. Now that would say, well there you go but... I have another computer connected as well and it is fine.

When I connect the problem computer to my router, it is fine.

Have you made sure to log into the router acting as a switch to ensure that DHCP is disabled? Have you tried using a different Ethernet port on the switch or another Ethernet cable?

I solved the problem by buying another switch and junking the router/switch

    Thank everyone
