I have been having the same problem on 2 computers since the last MS updates. OS is showing that it is activated. Latest event log on Activation failure is
    Health check failure:
    hr = 0x8004FE21, HealthStatus: 0x000000000001EFF0

Try uninstalling KB3004394, and then installing KB3024777

Sorry, tried the 'fix' and unfortunately it did not work on either computer. Did the manual d/l and still have the problem.

Click Start< in the Start search box type Command Prompt. Right click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.

Once Command Prompt opens type sfc /scannow and hit enter. The process will take some time so be patient. Once SFC finishes, reboot the computer and let me know if you can activate Windows successfully.

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.

Both computers show that they are activated, both have windows update in the programs and can access it and both still have the problem. Also I did the MS 'fix' on both. The window pops up @ 5 minutes after booting

Click Start< Administrative Tools< Services and set the Software Protection service to Automatic (Delayed Start) if you haven't already.

Are there any errors or disabled devices shown in Device Manager if you click View< Show hidden devices?

Try the fix here, This computer is not running genuine windows 0x8004fe21.

Software protection already on auto. No errors or disabled devices in Device manager. That fix looks a bit above my pay grade :). I would assume I would hit 'return' at the end of each line? Let me know if that is incorrect and I will look at giving it a shot later in the week. Also, would it make any sense to try system restore. I used it rarely in the past and did not have much in the way of good results. Thanks for the input so far. I guess I have to own some of the responsibility as I normally wait a couple of weeks before doing the monthly update, just for this reason. Don't know what got into me to do it right away this time.

On a search I found this site http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/genuine and ran the validation test which it says can repair some issues. Took @ 15 minutes and said I had a genuine copy, which I knew already. I will let you know if it fixed anything.

If your system is still having issues with activation despite running the validation check from Microsoft then you can try using System Restore.

Well this seemed to have worked. But the odd thing is that I did not do this on my wife's machine, which also had the problem, and it is no longer an issue on that computer either. My mind runs rampant with conspiracy theories :)
I will check back in if the issue resurfaces

We will keep the thread open for a couple of days and if everything is still working with no issues then post back and let me know.

Hi jusbouthadit, How many accounts do you have with MS?
From my experience with MS accounts - 1 common account used over 3 comps (my Desktop and laptop and wife's Desktop) any changes made like Desktop Theme seems to be applied to all 3. Go figure. All 3 are running W8.1
Any Apps downloaded for 1 comp show in the list of the account and show which is installed on which comp.
    Big 'Bro' knows all. Neil.

Only have 2 on W7 (another on xp but never really on web, just use as a back up for some games). No more problems so guess you could mark this resolved.
