when my OS was changed from XP to Win7 all my photographs were loaded to a 64gb San disk thumb drive. I have put them back in "My Doc. Picture Library ".
when I try to open a file it goes back to Recuva, I follow directions and get the message "Windows media player cannot play this file. The player might not support the file type or may not support the codex that was used to compress the file. the file types are JPG, BMF and PMG. Can anyone help the old man?/

Windows Media Player is most likely not the issue here. What happens if you right click the image, Select open with< Choose Default Program and select Windows Photo Viewer?

I did as you instructed. there is no "open with" on this menu. has Preview but it wont open.
I installed cordec version10.8.5 and now cant open individual photos but will show a slide show of all the pictures. I have just discovered that WMP and WMP classic are both on my machine

yes I see the menu but it doesn't have "open with" under 'scan with MS essentials, it has
"Restore previous versions ". when I click that I get a blank drop down. Apparently I don't. have a restore point set. As I stated in the first post the pictures were saved to a thumb drive and then put back in "My Pictures" folder. Sorry I am so computer ignorant. Johnny

PS I guess I have lost my irreplaceable photos. Many of deceased family members.

The Open With menu may be missing so see this link to re-enable it, How to Add or Remove the "Open with" Context Menu Item in Windows.

Reboot the machine after merging the registry file into the registry and then try right clicking a picture< select Open With< Choose default program and select Windows Photo Viewer from the list of applications.

You can open Windows Media Player and click Help< Check for updates to see if you have the latest version.

Did you select Windows Photo Viewer from the list of programs for opening pictures?

Did you make sure to set the Windows Photo Viewer as the default program for all file types that it can open?

    See the screenshot below.

I updated windows photo viewer. and got most of my pictures back. it would not support the forma that a few were filed under.
Mr. Omo I really appreciate you staying with me on this problem. I am so ignorant about these things but you and Mr. Bill have always worked me through the problem.

If you still have a good copy of the ones that won't open, rename them and use what is after the . of the ones that will open.

Run this registry file and reboot the machine, PNG File Association Fix.

Then see if PNG files open in Windows Photo Viewer.

I wouldn't download anything from Cnet. They have been know to bundle junk that you don't see and have problems with getting it off your PC. What is the name of the program? If Evan's suggestion doesn't work, and you want to try something post the name of the program here and somebody can give you some insite on it maybe. ALWAYS go to the maker of the program for the download if you insist on downloading something.
