Strange, MS is abandoning that consistent practice of numbering it's OS's. Does number 8 give so much bad vibes, that they had to skip the next number, and name the new one 10? How about 11 then, wouldn't that be even better?
Or MS could have done the same thing, as after Win 3.11 -> Win 95, and call the next OS Windows 2015.

Version 10 should be released before the end of 2015, and it has the Start-menu again.

Have a read here: History of Microsoft Windows
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Microsoft_Windows
They miss the addition of W8.1 but it covers the main history. I believe Windows 95 was supposed to be released in 1995 but didn't make the year. After 2000 and ME there does not appear to be any set series year/OS build. Neil.
MrBill, this will be of interest:
How much will Windows 10 Cost?

According to Indonesian news site Detik.com, which was first spotted by BGR, Andreas Diantoro, the president of Microsoft Indonesia, has announced that Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for all Windows 8 users.

READ: Microsoft might make Windows 10 upgrade free

Russian collective/leakers WZOR also claimed earlier this year that Microsoft is considering not charging for Windows 10.

ZDNet however, which often reports accurate Microsoft rumours, has heard the opposite: different SKUs of Windows will be offered at different prices to OEMs and consumers, and that the desktop version of Windows 10 will definitely cost something.

If that's the case then, there has been no word yet on pricing specifics.

What's wrong with W8.1? I've got a Notebook and 2 Tower units running W8.1 very successfully. Very fast and very secure.
Start8 gives me the Start Menu and it's sweet as. Neil.

Across desktop PCs as a whole, only 13.4% currently run Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, according to research firm NetMarketshare.

By contrast, it says 51.2% are powered by Windows 7 and 23.9% by Windows XP, a version that is no longer supported by Microsoft.

Mr Johnson said the reintroduction of the Start Menu should help Windows 10 fare better.

Got to agree with you. I liked 8 and now 8.1. No problems with it what so ever.

If you need a Start Menu - there are plenty of options available - both Free and Purchase type. I use Start8 which costs $4.95.
I don't see a problem installing either Classic Shell (Free) or Start8 as this makes it look like W7 start menu. Neil.

MS has changed the way of naming it's OS's several times. First they had consecutive numbers, Win 1, 2.xx, 3.xx. Windows 95 was also expected to be called Win 4. Its release was delayed several times. It was released in August of 1995. Then there were several year/OS build, (98, 2000, Me). Then they decided to have those fancy names, (xp, Vista). Then back to the consecutive numbers-method (7, 8.xx). Feels just funny, that now they will call the next one 10. As if they want to emphasise, that it will be so much better/different, than the previous one, which has been critized so much.

Microsoft really wants to kill Windows 7, which is not contributing new revenue.

    Windows 8s are certified dead.

Windows 9 will not be a better baby than 7 or 8. Abortion was approved.

Windows 10 gives a clean message to Apple Mac users. It resembles Mac OS X very much. But Windows 10 can't be Windows X.

Windows 10 gives a look-alike of OS X but can run on much cheaper notebooks than MacBook Air. Hopefully, it may stop refugees migrating from Windows to Mac. However, many friends have determined and set their budget aside for 2015 for a Mac, not thinking backward for another Windows based machine. (Unless a free-of-charge Windows 10 Virtual Machine and a free hypervisor are bundled on a MacBook Air.)
