I required to restore computer to factory settings. Computer was originally bought in 2009. Windows 7 update says 162 files are available (important). Is it a case of must install all files or can the notice be ignored? Advice will be most appreciated.

I strongly advise that you install the updates. Especially if they are listed as important.

Thank you for your advice. There are 162 files equal to 690Mb. I dare say the 152 updates represents five years of past updates. I am thinking, best time to download/instal files would be during night hours, guessing at least ten hours to complete. After thought, I have reformatted this computer a few times, this being the first time of notice to instal 162 update files.

Just do the Updates in small blocks which you can check in 'box'. I have found this to be the best way to avoid getting "Failures" and possible Startup problems. Neil.

I recommend that you don't just download through Windows Update. Download the patches to a directory & then run them from there. This way if you have to refresh your computer, you don't have to download everything again.

Other way is to use something like Autopatcher. It would download & install the updates. Though its manual, the updates are stored on your computer and it can update Win XP, Vista, Win 7, Win8 [both 32 & 64 bit], .NET, Silverlight, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe AIR, Adobe Flash and host of other utilities.

rsinfo, thank you, suggestions noted for future reference. All updates have now been installed. Computer is now acting strangely, slower and opening files without prompting. Most probably computer is at present confused and will settle down!
