I got this BSOD last night: A thread tried to release a resource it did not own.

I have had this before so i wiped windows 7 and reinstalled everything only to find that it happened again. It happened overnight just like last time at around 1:30 or 2:00 AM. (I run my computer all day and night to run programs that need to be connected to the internet). What can i do to fix this? It must not be a windows error if the reinstall did not fix it unless an update caused it.

I am currently running chkdsk but i dunno if it will fix it.

    Thanks

    Welcome to WindowsBBS;)

Anyone one of your running applications can cause a BSOD... SO can faulty ram chips.

Did you google the error message "?

The laptop is an Acer aspire that i took from windows 8 to windows 7. It is probably only a month old. I did Google it and i got stuff saying it could be programs or hardware. A lot was from 2005 and such. I did a chkdsk and will post what i received:

    Bsod

Fast forward a week and the issue happened again. So i guess the chkdsk did not fix it. same error wih a hex code of 000000E3. The only thing i can find about this is with xp. The laptop is the acer E-1 aspire which i had to do a bios thing to enabled legacy mode and me to install windows 7. Could this be causing the issue? I hate these kinds of problems :(

    Thanks

Hi cyris426, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Lets start by checking your memory. Run Memtest86+ and see if you have any faulty RAM modules. Read this guide on for using Memtest86+, Guide to using Memtest86+.

    Please note:

To work around the above, test the installed RAM in various configurations. If you have a single module, swap it around the slots. If you have a pair of modules, run each one singly, swapping between slots; and then run them in pairs swapping between pairs of slots. If you have 2 sets of matched modules do not get them mixed up.

Then you should test your hard drive using SeaTools for Windows. Run all the basic tests and see what comes up.

The issue didn't happen for awhile so i thought it had gone away. However then i got it again. Also sometimes it will be running with the screen off and then the fan will go to maximum speed and be making a lot of noise. It will then not respond. If i touch the touch pad it will not wake up from the screen being turned off and the fan will be at maximum. A reboot fixes this.

I will do the above tests this weekend. I cannot do it during the week because the foreign exchange market is open and the computer needs constant access to properly run the programs.

    Thanks

Okay so i ran memtest with the extended option and 10 passes. There is only 1 slot for ram in the back of the motherboard and only 1 4 gig Kingston chip in it. It ran for about 10 hours and when it rebooted a little box popped up in the bottom right and said no errors were found.

    Hi cyris426,
Why would you want to buy a W8 laptop then downgrade to W7?
I would assume that to run a laptop continuously, it must be running with the charger connected. This would cause a lot of unwanted heat.
My previous query is answered by this paragraph.
I would personally run a Tower unit PC with adequate cooling fans and the latest OS if I was going to run the PC continuously.
Windows 8.1 in my opinion runs very efficiently and would probably not have the little niggles W7 is presenting you with.
Why not take it back for a refund? Neil.

It is probably too late to return it now. i took it back to windows 7 because i hate windows 8 and there stupid tile page. That's great if it works good for tablets. My PC is not a tablet and i have no need for stupid application tiles. I choose a laptop because i already have a computer that's sitting on my desk and another tower is quite large.

In my opinion the computer should be able to run all day everyday and shouldn't run into heat issues. If it cant, it means that they didn't design it properly. I have removed the little black plastic piece on the bottom which will provide more airflow and propped up the bottom with little rubber pieces to lift it off the desk. Hopefully this will give it better airflow for the coming week.

    Any other ideas?

Hi cyris426, I am one of many who did not like the Tiles (Metro interface) when I first installed W8. I "Googled" and found others did not like it the Tiles and found there are a few Free and Low cost programs available to enable a Start Menu that you like.
I tried Classic Shell initially and since then have purchased Start8 ($4.95) and installed it on this (my main comp) and my HP Notebook and my wife's W8.1 PC.
This gives us a W7 Start Menu and enables us get around the OS in a way we can understand easily.
There have been a number of Threads here in WindowsBBS on this very topic and I believe that if you had followed these suggestions and used the alternate software Start Menus available, you would find W8.1 to be very fast and safe to use.
I'm also trying W10 Preview on a separate HDD and find it very fast and easy to get used to as the MS guys have given it a Start Menu because they obviously listened to users complaints.
I still think you have a heating problem and because your laptop is still under warranty, I would return it. Neil.

That's not how memtest works. You boot the computer from a memtest CD/DVD/USBkey. Then as memtest is running any memory errors are displayed on the screen in Red which makes them very obvious. Memtest will then continue running until the user stops the program and reboots the computer.

If your computer rebooted during the memtest diagnostics, it has a hardware problem that must be resolved before it can ever be expected to run 100% perfectly.

There is no software that can fix broken/failing/flaky/failed hardware.

It rebooted once the test was done. I had set it to 10 passes and then it finished it never said it had any errors, no red one the screen.

I just got a IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL blue screen though. Other than that i though raising it off the desk and opening the bottom hatch had helped it be more stable, at least from freezing, not blue screens.

I asked about warranty and they wanted to charge me 75$ to look at it or some ****.

Okay so what i did is downloaded Windows 8.1 and installed it. Then i installed a menu bar and now the computer seems to work great. 2 weeks and no problems so far. I dunno why windows 7 didn't work but now with the 8.1 installed so far so good. Thanks for the help!
