I note that you can buy Windows 8.1. + DVD from MS Store for £109. Is this a restricted copy? or more friendly than copy of Windows 8.1. that is pre-installed with a new computer? As from past experience, preinstalled OS of any version, caused much hard work when computer required a factory restore.
Can anyone please inform me what the purchase entails?

    Hi BobbyScot.

Why would it be? Its the full version of Windows 8.1.

Its the same version but its just the OS only.

By the way its much cheaper if you buy it from Amazon, Microsoft Windows 8.1.

Evan Omo, thank you for reply to my thread. I was thinking that the separate copy of Windows 8.1 would be less hassle than reinstalling the version supplied with a new computer. Thank you for pointing out that buying a copy of Windows 8.1. being cheaper than direct from MS.

    Yeah no problem.

You do know that you can create your own copy of Windows 8.1 for free as long as you have a genuine product key right? I can show you how to create your own Windows 8.1 DVD without you having to buy a new copy if that's what you want.

Evan Omo, thank you, appreciated. I thought a copy of Windows 8.1 or any other versions downloaded on a computer by the manufacturers could not be saved on a DVD. Bobby.

As long as its a regular or OEM copy of Windows then you can create your own Windows DVD.

Using recovery disks from the manufacturer will only work on the model of computer that they are designed to function on though.

You can follow these steps to create your own Windows 8.1 DVD.

You will need to create a Windows 8 DVD to install the Windows 8 OS. You can find the Windows 8 setup files here, Upgrade Windows with only a product key - Windows Help.

Once you have downloaded the ISO file you want, download and run the portable version of Active ISO Burner and burn the Windows 8 ISO file to a DVD.

Once you have your Windows 8 DVD created, follow the instructions in this link to perform a clean install of Windows 8, Clean Install - Windows 8.

Thank you for information, rather too complicated for me to follow. That is the problem buying a new computer with preinstalled OS, as no copy of OS is provided on a DVD. Bobby.

It really isn't that complicated to make your own Windows 8.1 DVD but if you'd rather just buy your own Windows 8.1 DVD then I'd recommend getting a copy from Amazon.

Is there anything else that I can help you with?

You have been most helpful and I certainly appreciate. I have been in computers since the 1970s, but Windows 8.1. is a complete new field or as you would say a learner of a new language. My thanks again, Bobby.

Evan Omo, I visited Amazon as you suggested, shown are different versions on Windows 8.1. and prices, most of which are dearer than Microsoft Store price. Windows Pro 8.1. I presume is what I need. I would appreciate your views as to which copy of Windows 8.1. be best to buy. Thanks, Bobby.
