    What is windows actually doing when the little icon with the clock comes up.
    It appears to me to be a very annoying little pest.
    I have manually set it to do its mysterious job after 11 pm, but it comes on at any time of the day and will not go off.
    I turn it off manually ( Stop Maintenance) it goes off but not for very long and it will come on again.
    In my opinion Action Center should show what is actually going on, what type of maintenance is being done.
    Or am I just missing something.
    Any comments are welcome.

    Thanks Pete, It still leaves me to ponder, why it still comes on at any given time despite having set a fixed time for Maintenance to start.
    Like I have mentioned above, I have set Maintenance in the Action Centre to perform at 11PM, but it does not matter when I turn the computer on, some 15 - 20 minutes later it will start, I manually turn it off again, but it will start up again.
    Gremlins maybe??:eek::eek:

    I really don't know what's going on there - 8.1 is on my laptop which I use infrequently, possibly not for long enough or not at the scheduled time.

    Check the scheduler again. Often, tasks that are scheduled to run when your computer is off or asleep are set to run when your computer wakes again.

    That might have been the case here, since it seems to be as it should be.
    Hasen't come on again at un-programmed times.

    The initial times are often at really odd times, like 2:27am. Some will wake your computer, some will wait until you wake your computer. I changed my times to happen around 9am - a time when my computer is up, but typically a couple hours after I woke my computer for the day and finished all my urgent duties.
