When I launch the UDK installer, I get an error message: "Your video card must support Shader Model 3 ".

    UDK means: https://www.unrealengine.com/products/udk/

    My system information is attached.

There s no mention of Shader in that report so you may assume that it is not supported. Have a look at this thread

Your graphics are integrated in a chip on the motherboard - you will need to install a graphics card with Shader 3 support.

Hi zhshqzyc. Your system specs located here, Compaq Presario SR5410F Desktop PC Product Specifications indicate that your system is using an integrated video chip which will not be able to run any games.

You will need to install a dedicated video card if you want to be able to play games on that machine but since that computer has a 250 watt power supply then your PSU will need to be replaced as well.

Even if you replace the PSU and installed a dedicated video card, your computers CPU is only a 1.8 GHz dual core chip which will struggle big time to play anything decently even on low settings.

What other games are you trying to run on that machine?

Hi, I am not playing games.

I just use the udk software to design animation.
Do I have to replace the desktop with a new one?

I would recommend buying a new computer in my opinion but it depends on how much money you want to spend. You would be spending about 100-120 dollars for a new video card and power supply to upgrade your existing machine.

If you have enough money to buy a decent desktop machine though then I would go that route since a new computer will give you much better performance and it won't cost that much more.

How much would you want to spend on a new computer?

100-120 dollars looks good for me. But would you please recommend one or two brands?
Also I want to increase the memory. Just keep Vista is fine because there is no way to upgrade it to Windows 7. I just chatted with Mocrosoft, they only supply Windows 8 or 8.1 now in their store.

oops. A lot of money and power supply's body is huge. I don't have space in the study room. If a new desktop can replace it, what is the option?

I don't want a fancy, just basic one.

If you want something inexpensive then I would get something like this, ASUS M11BB-US011S Desktop PC A4-Series APU A4-6300 (3.70GHz) 4GB DDR3 1TB HDD No Screen Windows 8.

But again its all about options here. You can either buy a new desktop or keep the one you have and upgrade it using the parts that I provided above.

The power supply just looks big in that picture but it will fit in your computers case. What do you mean you don't have space in the study room?

I thought that the power supply was out of the machine box and would occupy space in the room. Perhaps misunderstanding. Do you mean I have take the old one it out and replace the new power supply?

Yes you will need to open up the case, take out the old power supply and install the new one in order to power a dedicated video card. If you don't want to deal with opening up your current computer and replacing the PSU, installing a video card and adding more RAM then I would suggest that you buy a new machine.

    Hay,

Because I don't play games usually. My final purpose is use UDK software to finish a school animation project.

So perhaps I only need to install a video card, saving money. :) I may think buy a new one on Black Friday or so.

For the video links, I found that they are GeForce GT 610 1GB 64-Bit or 2GB.
My OS is Vista home premium 32-bit. Do they match each other?

    Or choice:

Yes you can install that video card since the bus width doesn't determine if your computer can run that piece of hardware.

A 64-bit bus means the graphics processor can access 64 bits of data at a time whereas a 128-bit bus means the graphics processor can access 128 bits of data at a time. If two graphics cards differ only in the memory bus width, then the larger bit bus width can improve performance by delivering more data within the same period of time. Having a higher bus width allows the video card to have much more bandwidth.

The memory size, such as 512 megabytes or 1 gigabyte, dictates the maximum resolution deliverable by the graphics card. Having faster video memory means that games and other tasks that use the video card will be much faster. For gamers intent on playing games at high settings, a 128-bit video card with 1 GB of GDDR5 memory is recommended as anything less then that will struggle to run games at high resolutions.

The video cards with a bus width of 256-bit are usually meant for running multiple monitors and playing games at extremely high resolutions. So for your needs an Nvidia GT 610 with a 64-bit bus width will be fine and it doesn't require a lot of power to run.

Keep in mind that you must upgrade your power supply to at least 300 watts or more when installing that video card. This is because that 250 watt PSU will most likely not run that card and if it does then you risk the integrity of that PSU and if the PSU fails then it could take out your other components with it.

The video card from PNY is another good option but the power supply doesn't look good at all. Get the Corsair PSU that I linked to since its not only more efficient but it is modular which means that you will only use the cables you need and that will make it easier to install in your small case and increase airflow.

A word of caution here re. the PSU. You have a Dell Vostro - Dell and others are notorious for using non standard sized PSU's - check sizing very carefully before buying.

Confused, my machine is Compaq Presario SR5410F Desktop. Why did you mention Dell?

Because that is the PC listed under your My System :)

    Same comment applies to HP/Compaq

Pete did you misread the specs of the machine?

Its a Compaq Presario computer NOT a Dell machine.

Anyway good point regarding the PSU's but I haven't come across HP/Compaq using proprietary PSU's in their builds when compared to Dell.

The PSU is the same price if you use the rebate from newegg when buying it. I haven't used that monkeyshoppa site to buy parts so I don't know how good of a store they have.
