I've got an old XP-Pro comp that can take sometimes 5 minutes or longer to finally recognize when I plug in various WD Passport external drives and until then it doesn't show up in MyComputer even tho the external drive light is steady on.

If I reboot then it sees the drive fine.

How can I get it to see the drives quicker without having to reboot?

Hi Rob. If you boot the computer into Safe Mode does the hard drive get detected quickly there or not?

Are there any errors reported in Device Manager?

    Evan,

    The problem is intermittent.
I'll try to reply the next day or two when it re-ocurrs.

So does the drive get detected quickly when Windows is booted into Normal Mode on some occasions? Try using Safe Mode and let me know if that makes any difference.

    Evan,

I can't explain it, but it seems to be working fine at this point.
maybe something got cleaned up at reboot?

    I'll post any follow ups.

    Thanks

    Barbara-Ann,

    Thanks for the reply.

Yes, Auto Play is running because that is eventually what pops up to tell me that it is finally reading the drive.

    What do you suggest?

Did you have a suggestion on Auto Play?

Can I turn it off and will that help?

So are you still having issues with the drive being recognized?

    Evan,

I've only tried it once yesterday and 2x today and so far it's working without any unusual delay.
