I am looking for a general concensus on local backup software. I see Acronis listed #1 on several sites but I always wonder if these sites are being paid to list the results.

    Any thoughts are welcomed, thanks

If you only want to back up data I would highly recommend Synchback - I've used the paid for SE version for more years than I can remember without issue.

For System Imaging I use Acronis on a weekly basis. Disclaimer - I have never had to invoke an image restore :)

Thanks Pete - I thought I would have had more than one opinion though.

    Me too....

I use Acronis TI for OS imaging to protect against the end of the world.
I HAVE had to use it once, and thank heaven it worked great.

For my data, which is stored on another partition, I also use SyncBack SE.
I've been with it since the early, simple, free days and have loved and trusted it.
The latest release, paid and complicated, can do everything I've ever imagined in my darkest dreams, and more.
But it takes time to study and learn the details of all the bells and whistles.

Both programs run weekly on different nights and send status logs for me in the morning.

Actually marking the thread as Resolved is likely to inhibit any further contributions.

True, however I found it odd that out of 40 views yesterday, yours was the only response. I'll change it back later today and see what happens

SyncBackFree for backing up files. I've been using it for years and it does the job very effectively. Never had a problem with it, and when you set up a "profile," you can get it done on a regular basis with only a few clicks. Also, you have a ton of options, most especially about what types of files in the destination drive you want to keep.

I use that for making an exact duplicate of my documents partition. I keep an external drive for this purpose. I also use amazon cloud drive (they give you 5 gigs or so free, I pay $50/yr for 50 gigs) for backing up my "drop dead" files. Honestly if my house were to burn down, I'd also lose my external drive, so the ones I absolutely would have to have (or else dropping dead would seem like an easier option than replacing them), are also backed up in the cloud.

I purchased and used Acronis, could not use it as I encountered several times of sheer trouble in running my computer Windows 7 64bit. Certainly it was too complicated in my case, but other readers certainly did not agree with me.
I had some trouble with Microsoft Backup/Restore software, after persevering it has run satisfactory for the past several years.

Hitachi is now part of Western Digital. Maybe you could locate their free version of Acronis for you harddrive. (my search came up empty)

I have the WD version, and I am wondering if corporate has integrated that software for use with Hitachi drives.
