I use WeatherMate software at present. Are there any other similar software titles available?

The Weather Channel app works well with Windows 7, but the latest offering has a toolbar embedded in it (Ask toolbar, I believe). I don't know why, but the toolbar was not available for Windows 7, but I had to uninstall it in Windows 8 even though I chose not to include the toolbar in the initial setup.

Beyond that, the app worked great.

I downloaded and installed suggested program. No icon is shown on desktop or indeed any references can be found in my computer.

Apparently you require Java to be installed, which I am not prepared to do this, as in the past Java caused to many errors.

James: Quite a big difference from when I used to use this program. A lot of new features. Going to have to read the tutorials. It looks like it could be fun figuring it out. I will never install weatherbug again. What a horror show getting rid of it.

BobbyScot, are you familiar with Weather Underground? Here is the page for Aberdeen:

    http://classic.wunderground.com/cgi...y=Aberdeen,+United+Kingdom&searchType=WEATHER

They have a Windows Vista Sidebar Gadget that might work on Windows 7

    http://classic.wunderground.com/download/vista.asp

WeatherBar is one other alternative you might take a look at:

    http://weatherbar.codeplex.com/

"WeatherBar is an application written in C# to show the weather in a specific location. One point that makes this application different from other weather applications and gadgets is the ability to integrate with the Windows 7 taskbar. Therefore, instead of constantly switching to the desktop to take a peek at the pinned gadget, the user can simply take a look at the taskbar, or right-click on the application icon to read the forecast. I wasn't going to mention this, but there is a highly customizable weather program out there called Weather Pulse (build 2.2.4.4).

The guy that started this free program ran into issues with weather.com's (once free) rss feed a while back and it killed the program. For some reason, late last year, the free rss feeds returned, except for the severe weather alerts. I ran this program daily on XP for years, and it was my bread & butter for weather reporting, and now I am using it on Windows 7.

There is one drawback though. Version 2.2.4.4 was the last stable build that I am aware of, and it is not supported anymore. In addition, The Weather Pulse web site (Tropic Designs) gets less than stellar results from Web of Trust.

I, personally, have not had any issues with version 2.2.4.4, except that I have to right-click on the tray icon to get the program to close (and to minimize the view), and I don't run the program continuously - rather, only when I need to, and I have disabled it from checking for software updates.

For what it's worth, the author now gets his rss feeds from the National Weather Service, and he has released version 3 for beta testing for anyone that wants to try it. I am sticking with 2.2.4.4 for now because it includes an hourly forecast, whereas version 3 does not. Version 2.2.4.4 will show the weather for London, so I presume it will preview weather for your area too.

Here is a Softpedia link for 2.2.2.4 in case you are interested (choose the UK mirror).

There is a learning curve with the settings, so it may take some doing to get things like you want unless you settle for the defaults. Also, you can add your own weather image links under the Weather Images tab, and you can delete any that you don't like. I use that section for linking up to local TV station weather radar images, 7 day forecasts, US drought monitor images, NOAA river level forecasts. etc. The list is endless.

James Martin, I downloaded your suggested software title. It recognises my UK town, though the readings are different to other programs and my own station. Weather Pulse, does not appear to have facility to change Fahrenheit to Celsius, and I use Celsius for my recordings. Certainly it shows reading values that I require.

Look under View > Settings > General tab > Use Metric Measurements.

You can also find Settings by right-clicking on the tray icon that displays the current temperature too. There is another tray icon beside the temp display that is supposed to show the current weather conditions, but mine doesn't work that well since the rss feed was altered by weather.com (version 2.2.4.4 does not get it's feed from the National Weather Service that I aware of)

James Martin, I do not use the metric table for my workings.

    Correct.

I temporarily tried the metric setting, and all of my Fahrenheit readings changed to Celsius.

Yes, indeed you are correct, however all entries in miles become kilometres. If correct, it requires one or the other but not both, as shown in the program.

You prefer miles to kilometers? Are the roads in Scotland measured in miles?

If you do prefer miles. I would opt for Fahrenheit over Celsius. A Celsius degree is equal to more than one Fahrenheit degree, so that gives the latter the edge in my book for pinpoint accuracy, but I live in the USA too. ;)
