Just as well I decided to bite the bullet and upgrade directly to W8/8.1 and have hardware capable to stay current for a while. :D Neil.

    Ugh. :(

Did MS move up the date?

So far, I am not too enamored with Windows 8.1, although I think there are some corruption issues this Gateway laptop I have been using for two weeks now, but I still prefer Windows 7 by far.

Don't know really that this is news. This has been the date listed on the Lifecycle Fact sheet for a long time. Extended support, which gives you automatic updates offered each time they are released, goes until January 2020 as long as you have SP 1 installed and was announced in February 2012.

Title is wrong. It should be "Microsoft Windows 7 Mainstream Support to End January 2015 "

That has been known since... well forever.

Support for Windows 7 RTM without service packs ended on April 9, 2013.

Extended support for Windows 7 SP1 ends January 14, 2020

What is the difference between mainstream support and extended support?
    • Mainstream support—Microsoft will offer mainstream support for a minimum of 5 years from the date of a product's general availability, or for 2 years after the successor product is released, whichever is longer. For example, if you buy a new version of Windows and five years later another version is released, you will still have two years of support left for the previous version.
    • Extended support—Microsoft will offer extended support for either a minimum of 5 years from the date of a product's general availability, or for 2 years after the second successor product (two versions later) is released, whichever is longer.

    The difference?

    No longer available:
    • No-charge incident support
    • Warranty claims
    • Design changes and feature requests
    +
    • Non-security hotfix support (Requires extended hotfix agreement, purchased within 90 days of mainstream support ending.)

I imagine I'll be with Windows 7 for a long time unless Microsoft decides to use common sense in their next offering.

I'll be needing to make some Office decisions, too, since I am still using Office 2007.

I always try to get the latest OS anyway. So it's not a big deal. Do not get me wrong I love Win 7, but, progress is progress and there is nothing you can do about it. Sometimes you have to learn to adapt.

Well, I nearly freaked out, but after reading about different varieties of support, I got the point.
At my work three computers out of four are running Win 7, and two of them were purchased just recently, within this year. I don't think were going to do any OS upgrades, or get new pc's with W8.x before that 2020, unless there will be some hardware failure.

ThomasJK: I would not start to worry yet. You still have a few years left.

Yes, at first I was astounded (support to end Jan -15), but MrBill and Arie clarified the differences between Mainstream and Extended support, which will continue to January 2020.
As mentioned earlier, the title of the original story at Yahoo news is wrong, (it should be, Win 7 Mainstream support to end January 2015), but surely, it is more dramatic that way.
