I have a new computer that has win7 profesional installed. My older word and xcell files were created in office 2000. I copied all the win 2000 wiles to my documents folder and when trying to open a word file I get a error msg:

THE FILE MAY BE IN SUE BY ANOTHER APPLICATION, THE FILE FORMAT MAY NOT BE SUPPORTED BY ANY OF THE INSTALLED CONVERTERS, OR FILE MAY BE CORRUPT.

The word extension on the older files is .DOC.

Do I need a program to convert them?

    Any help would be appreciated.

According to File formats that are supported in Works .....
However the Microsoft Window7 Application Compatibility List does not list Works 7 as compatible without an upgrade, presumably to Works 9 which I have installed on Windows 7 for the database. You obviously have Work7 installed, but it may not be operating fully or correctly.

Look on eBay for Works 9 - listed for as little as £5.50 in UK.

I found a .doc file on my computer running Win 7 x64 Pro and it opened in Works 9 WPS without any problems.

Thanks, I may just install my office 2000 and delete works. At least that way all my files were created in 2000.

I think I will try it, and if it fails I can always load open office.
