For the past week now (that I've paid extreme attention), my laptop HD is running all the time. It's warm to the touch and I just don't know what is causing it or how to check to see what is running to make it stop.

I have updated and run all antivirus, malware checkers: Malwarebytes, Spybot S&D, MSE, and just yesterday replaced MSE with Comodo Internet Security. Everything checks out ok and I don't know what else to run so this is where I need help.

    I am running XP pro.

    Thanks

You mean the HD is running when the laptop is in sleep mode?

Have you looked in Task Manager and see if something is running extremely high?

Can you supply more info on the laptop? Make? Model? Hard drive brand/size etc, Neil.

The hard drive does not run while sleeping. It works as it should.

I've attached a copy of the Task manager and also a page that includes info on my laptop with additional notations.

Below is a link to additional help I received from Evan. This worked great but like I said earlier, now my laptop has started acting strange again by running more than usual. It bothers me more now because it happens when I am not using the browser at all. It seems to stall when trying to do anything. For instance, when trying to open a folder or even a program, it will start then stall, continue a little and stall again and finally open but still continue to stall when working with a document.

I am not receiving any error messages from winrdlv3.exe. It's just there and I know what it is. It was there when my machine was acting normal so as a last resort I may attempt to do what is suggested in the link you provided.
I ran a full scan with Comodo and it did find two files untrusted (one being winrdlv3.exe) at which point I checked it off to block and then in some of the other windows, I checked it off to be deleted. It seems to have slowed the HD some but it still is flickering more than usual.

    Any other suggestions?

Well, after a week of working with Broni on cleaning up my laptop, it is back to running constantly again so I am now convinced that the culprit is here: C:\WINDOWS\system32|winrdlv3.exe It did not get removed when I was cleaning with Broni over at the Malware forum.

So Mr. Retiredlearner, I am heading over to your link and see what I can do.

I haven't been using my laptop except to pay bills so I have not been exposed to any nasties. (I hope) Besides, when I look at the Comodo sandboxed log where the file is being blocked, it is trying to get through about every 30 seconds.

I've changed my mind about trying to remove it myself using the link provided. I am not that experienced with what is safe to remove when doing it by myself. I would rather have this forums guidance and help.

    Any takers?

I did originally remove it the way your link described but it left behind just that one winrdlv3.exe file. It is listed 3 times on my task manager. I removed it way before Broni helped me this last time cleaning my laptop. I thought maybe that this last time would get it removed but I guess I'm going to have to have a reinstall done. I don't think I can manage it, but I have a geek friend that can do it for me.
    Thanks for all your help.

It is a surveillance software that I thought I might be able to use remotely in another business location.

I tried the link at the SurveilStar site. It would not give me a code so I guess the decision has been made. A re-install for sure.

Try the non-destructive reinstall and post back with the results.
