My subscription to Norton Internet Security Expired, so I bought, downloaded and installed the new Norton Anti-Virus. It wouldn't let me update, saying I needed a new subscription for Internet Security, so I bought, downloaded, and installed that. Now, everything appears to work great, except that I always have an error message (the red X at in the toolbar) saying that I need to update my virus definitions. However, I do this, and the definitions update, but the error remains. I didn't uninstall my original IS or the AV before installing the new IS (a mistake, I know), so I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the new IS, but the problem persists. I can no longer try to uninstall the older versions. The Norton people say they know how to fix it, but want to charge me to tell me how (fee-based customer support...... ) Please Help

cdesjard--Unfortunately your problem is not weird. You will find many references to problems with uninstalling Norton products or trying to install new versions over old.
See this page for instructions on how to get rid of everything associated with Norton from your harddrive

The above advice assumes you have the CD or download files to reinstall the latest NIS. (If you do not, post back.)
Since NIS includes Norton Antivirus you can install the latter as part of the new installation of NIS. (I understand you have downloaded a NAV install file. Do not install NAV over the NAV installation from NIS. You might keep it for using next year, however. You may be able to get a new full year of service by using it to install NAV at that time, if you uninstall NIS first.)
P.S. As part of the uninstall process, after using the above online Tool, run a Search for a file called "MyProfile.UserProfile ". If you find it in a folder that is marked Symantec, Delete it also. I think that will help you get a full year's worth of service from your new installs.
P.P.S. No guarantees, but I think some of the links here lead to free online support from Norton
